Q: Why does my MacBook log me out automatically?

I just got a new MacBook (2016) and it keeps logging me out when the screensaver kicks in or when I manually lock the machine. I've checked System Preferences and under Security & Privacy > General > Advanced... the option to "Log out after ## minutes of inactivity" is disabled (and always has been). Under Energy Saver > Power Adapter, the option to "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" is active (previously disabled, but enabling it did not help).

What else can I do to resolve this? I lose work every time I have unsaved edits on my machine and it logs me out, which gets frustrating pretty quickly.

    Hi m0pher,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you are experiencing a frustrating situation where your Mac is logging you out unexpectedly. We also see that you have completed a lot of great troubleshooting, but the issue continues.

To continue where you left off troubleshooting, there are a couple of different steps we would like you to complete. These steps will help us isolate the issue a bit further.

The following article describes how to test an issue by using safe mode and then by testing in a new user account.
