Sep 19, 2016 6:32 AM in response to mryellby den.thed,Can you login and run in Safe Mode...?
If so, then there could be a number of things that are preventing normal startup.
1. Startup Items and Login Items
2. Bad external devices or cables
If not, then try OS X Recovery > Utilities > Disk Utility > First Aid > Run
or using your OS X Install Disc 1 for 10.6 and earlier

Sep 19, 2016 12:58 PM in response to mryellby den.thed,It sounds like you have installed or setup some funky third party Startup Item or Items, that need to be removed while your booted into Safe Mode.
see > thexlab.com/faqs/startupitems.html
the article is a little dated, but does a great job of explaining how to track down and remove Startup Items.
