Q: Using fcpx over a network with multiple users and permission issues.

We have multiple iMacs on a school network. We are having issues with permissions of different students, accessing the scratch disk and only having read access to their own work, we are constantly having to give all users read write to the entire scratch disk and therefore can access each others work which is not ideal. Is there a way to get around this without using a RAID or individual HD's?

    Hi jc

So a little more info would be helpful. If you are a school, are you using OS X Server? There are many additional features when you use Apple's Server. It really is geared for multi users and makes administrating Apple products much easier. Server allows Admins to set up multiple layers (tiers) of access permissions.

Also not sure what you want as far as common access to, verses individual files. I'll take a stab at guessing.

You have some "Media" that is shared(?) Video clips, music, photos. These would be placed on a shared volume (think a disk or a partition) that has permissions set to "Ignore permissions on this volume". Or you set this so "Everyone" can "Read" but not "Write" to this volume. This lets anyone use it. Students can create Projects with "Leave Media In Place" so it is not copied to local drives.

Each student can then create their own "Library" and store it locally or on a separate drive location. You could create "Folders" for each student if you want, good if they need to store additional resources for their own use, their Folder/Library permissions can be set only to them, and administrators. That way students do not gain admin privileges. (Not a good idea) You can change permissions either in the Server software or through the "Get Info" pane on the "Library bundle" or student Folder. Terminal use is good here too.

    Hope this helps, Greg
