I would be happy to help you get your photos from your iPhone to an external drive.

Next you can move your photo library from the pictures folder to the external or just export them from Photos with "File > Export"

Photos can automatically share files to your computer via photo stream with an Photos>Preferences>General to likewise save a copy to your Photo library.

You can backup your computer using Time machine.
