How To Capture Footage from a DVDR?

Hi, In El Capitan (10.11.3) what is the best way to record footage from a DVD into in a video clip? Is there some software you can get? I am not doing any piracy or copyright infringement, it is a home made DVD of non-copyright material. I was told VCL player can do this. However, it only records the audio (not picture) and VCL player does not open/play the DVD from which I want to record footage which is a home made DVDR.

Has anybody got any ideas? Is there any software that you can recommend for El Capitan?

Thanks for your help

I downloaded it but I couldn’t install it because I got this message …

“HandBrake can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers”

I will continue with this another time because I haven’t got time at the moment. Thanks of your help.

This is because this program, like many free or open source ones, is not "signed", and as a security precaution you are told so.

To open this or other program that is not signed but that you trust, then, for the first time only, right click or control-click on the program's icon and choose Open. You will be presented with a similar dialog, but with an extra Open button. Click Open and you're good to go. Then from now on the system will let you open it normally.
