Q: My Mac crashes with weird barcode screen

Hello everyone,

I have been having my macbook pro for about 3 or 4 years now and it's doing fine but recently my mac has been experiencing few crashes I didn't care much back then because it was happening every once in a while, but lately it's every 2 or 3 days, the issue is when I'm doing anything on my mac it freezes with this barcode like screen and it doesn't respond to any action and after few seconds it shuts down and I will be forced to start my mac all over again, I don't know what the problem is. If anyone has experienced the same issue I have or know how to handle it please share it

with me. thanks.

It is almost certain to be a hardware problem that only Apple will be able to fix. You could run Apple Hardware Test / Apple Diagnostics but each of its possible results leads to the same outcome:

    • identifying faulty hardware that only Apple will be able to fix,
    • "no trouble found" despite the fact something is obviously wrong,
    • or an inability to run AHT due to the problem you're experiencing.

If you want to continue troubleshooting on your own, restart your Mac in "Safe Mode". Read about how to do that here: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support.

It is generally inconvenient to use a Mac in that mode for any length of time. It's just an additional step that will aid in troubleshooting. You will need to use "Safe Mode" long enough to determine if the same problem occurs, or not. I realize that could be days.

In Safe Mode, it's normal for graphics to appear jagged and clunky while loading web pages or switching between applications. Audio is disabled on some Macs, and some applications (iTunes for example) won't work.

To exit Safe Mode restart your Mac normally.
