Hi,

switching to iOS 11 from a 6s backup to a brand-new 8+(iOS11already installed) I had the same problem.

It has been at least my 5th upgrade/swith/change of iPhone and never encountered this issue before.

But I think I FOUND THE ANSWER . Note that I used it on my French language/French hardware iPhone.

1) settings->siri and search

2) de-activate Messages search

3)shut down the iphone

4) Reboot . Don't use the messages app

5) settings->siri and search

6) Activate Messages search

7) Wait (I know it's hard) at least a minute👿

8) Go to Message App. Should work 🙂 ✅

Thank you David!!! Using your comment of the phone being in French, I added this step and it worked:

1) settings->General ->Language & Region-> change to French

2) settings->siri and search

Language->change to French

de-activate Messages search

3)Close the imessages app

4)shut down the iphone

5) Reboot. Don't use the messages app

6) settings->siri and search

7) Activate Messages search

8) Wait (I know it's hard) at least a few minutes

9) Go to Message App. Should work

The first time this did not work for me. Be patient! The second time I waited longer! I can now search through all my text messages just like before.

Guys

This is a known issue and apple have refused to fix it. I had an apple rep escalate this to the engineering team and they came back wiht the following reply. I mean what an absolute JOKE. This is the first time I have written on a message board or forum however I purposely went out of my way to let people know how ridiculous their reply is. IT WOULD BE so easy for apple to allow this but they know about this and are REFUSING to fix it!!!!!

Spotlight search not working as expected.

Taken from engineerings reply on the issue:

———

"What the customer is experiencing is actually considered expected behaviour. With the release of iOS 10, customers are now only able to search the last 200 messages with Spotlight or the in app search. This would include the last 200 sent and received messages.

The 200 searchable messages limit is only after restoring from a backup prior to iOS 10. This is why devices that had the same Messages database and were not restored from a backup when they upgraded to iOS 10 can still search prior to the 200 limit.

If the customer would like to see this function in a different manner going forward, please encourage the customer to submit feedback at apple.com/feedback. “
