Q: iOS 10 no sound from ear speaker or EarPods

After update in iOS 10 (in iPhone 6s and iPhone 5s) i have this problem during making or receiving calls. Most of the times there is no sound from ear speaker or EarPods and i have to press the speakerphone during calls to listen. To recover this i have to shut down my iPhone and open it again. This seems to happen after i use one time the EarPods.

Consider that i use EarPods in 90% of my calls and iOS 9 i had no problem at all.

iPhone 6s, iOS 10

Latest update: after 68 hours and about 44 calls both incoming and outgoing, first incident of no sound and suddenly no service from carrier.

After a reboot everything back to normal.

    I will keep you updated.

I'm hoping for a new software update to fix this soon, nothing much we can do apart from erasing and restoring our phones. Too much of a hustle though.

By the way I haven't heard of any iPhone 7 users complaining, if anyone has any insights on whether this bug affects iPhone 7's please let us know!

In phone settings, I had enabled 'Calls on other devices' so I turned it off (I don't need this function).

No problems since then although it is not a reliable statistic so far.

I comment it just in case some of you had this also on.

As soon as I experience this mutegate I'll post it

I have the exact same problem.

ios 10.0.2 on an iPhone 6S.

Incredibly frustrating when I have to take so many calls in the day.

Reboot is the only thing that works. I am so frustrated that I am going to downgrade tonight.

Hello. Yes.  Ihave a new iPhone 7, at first I thought it was a faulty phone or something with the lightning to 3.5mm adapter. It happens with the lightning EarPods too.  I haven't used my Bluetooth headset enough to know if that also has the issue.   Then I found this thread and realize the problem is iOS.

I received the phone with iOS 10.  I updated to 10.0.2.  I still have the issue though for me toggling the speaker phone on/off or plugging/unplugging the headset seems to work to get the sound back.

I typically have problems with the phone though yesterday it happened with a podcast app (overcast).

iPhone 7 is not a solution.

I Have filed a feedback report.

Today I read on iClarified that there's a new update for signal droppings and connectivity problems.

Has anyone tried it out yet? Maybe it solves some of our problems as well.

However, just to keep you updated didn't have any problems since yesterday's no signal incident.

what I don't understand is, why this randomly hits all models, 5s 6 6s and 7 and it appears only a very small amount are plagused, what makes our phones the ones? There are millions of iPhones all around the world running 10.0.2 without any problems. It makes me still feel in some way hardware has to be related. I have been through 3 handsets all with the same problem after 10.0.1 . Major companies make patches on software depending on how many consumers are affected, Even car companies only do recalls based on how many accidents or deaths are possible. the apple care senior advisers I have spoken to , and there have been many have said none of their calls other then me are about the audio problem. They said these kind of patches are very difficult to have the IOS developers roll out. Because they almost always cause additional problems. If 70 or 80 percent of the users were experiencing the problem they would be forced to modify the IOS . Maybe there is no hope. There must be a way to go back to 9.3.4 ??? Anyone??? Know

Everyone, in addition to apple.com/feedback, you may also want to post an actual bug report for this problem on https://bugreport.apple.com/.

FYI iOS 10.0.3 is only available for iPhone 7 models, not for the 6 and 6S several of us have seen the problem on.

Same problem here, waiting for a solution (iPhone 6S).

    Reset unuseful, problem persists.

But I found (hope) a temporary workaround:

I had a custom ringtone and switched to one of the stock ringtones. Since then, problem has disappeared.

Suspect it's an audio channel collision between normal audio and ringtone audio...

    Apple engineers, Help!!!

Well unfortunately its an issue that is plaguing people far and wide.  Ive experienced this issue now with three 6S iPhones each one being replaced at the Apple store in Geneva when I brought this problem to them, and two iPhone 7, and Im in Switzerland.  There was an attempt by another forum member to get locations of where this is primarily occurring but I do believe that fell flat.  Once the reported workarounds are used, such as a hard reset, reset network connections, or simply turning the speaker phone on and off again, there is no problem with the hardware because following the above mentioned workarounds the standard issue Apple headset works as per normal.  Multiple entries stating that this issue is completely random are founded as this morning I was on a call one minute with my headset on and then the next I went to place a call and the issue at hand occurred and this is not the first time it happens.  The more people that get on board and send a feedback report or a bug report the sooner that it may be realized that this is becoming a recurring issue in greater numbers.

A Hint: I switched to a stock ringtone AND did a hard reset.

    Since then, everything works...

Are you using custom ringtones? Just to help Apple engineers in diagnosing and reproduce the problem...

Dont know why, but I did what you told (switch ringtone and Hard Reset) and now I can hear on the earpiece! It is not a  100% recovery, but it's definitely an improvement.

    Thank you!!

Please let us know if this also corrects the issue involving not just being able to hear through the headset but also that the microphone works when making calls and dictating messages or emails etc.
