Q: OS X v 10.11.6 Problems

OS X El Capitan

Version 10.11.6

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009)

Memory 16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

I updated to 10.11.6 from the prior version of El Capitan about 6 to 8 weeks ago (when it came out).

Since then, I’ve had problems with Mail, Safari, recognizing a blank CD in the DVD/CD built-in drive, Preview, and with my Word and Excel applications.

Examples of the problems are:

  1. After a restart, it takes about one minute to open Safari and Mail.
  2. Preview – after looking at jpegs, when I try to open more jpegs, I get a message: “The file “name” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view. To view or change permissions, select the item in the finder” I created these jpegs. In order to see the jpegs, I have to close Preview, and reopen.
  3. Word and Excel open in about a minute and a half. Then, it takes 10 to 15 seconds to close a new file. When I click on and hold the Word or Excel icon in the dock., “Force Quit” automatically shows without holding down the option key.
  4. The “beach ball” appears and spins almost every time I back out of a web page in Safari.

Every three days or so, I restart. I still have the problems.

I have opened Activity Monitor in the past month, and it looked ok.

A few minutes ago:

Physical Memory: 16.00 GB

Memory Used: 4.72 GB

Cached File: 3.36 GB

Swap Used: 0 bytes

APP Memory: 3.09 GB

Wired Memory: 1.63 GB

Compressed: 0 bytes

I don’t know what to do. I was thinking I would live with this until the next OS is available later this Fall, but it is trying my patience.

Thanks for your time,
