Upgrade iPad 2 to iOS 10?

iPad 2 is not on the compatibility list of iOS 10 on the Apple site; despite that, my iPad 10 has downloaded iOS10, asking me to upgrade.

Few questions:

  1. Why would Apple let an incompatible device download an update?
  2. Has anyone upgraded iPad 2 to iOS 10? If yes, what issues have you faced?
  3. Would you recommend upgrading my iPad 2 to iOS 10? If not, why not?

Thank you!

Thank you ShagCA; I have multiple devices and know that it is indeed an iPad 2 (the iPad 10 was obviously a typo).

Well the iPad has downloaded iOS 10; what bugs me is that Apple let it download on an iPad 2 which is not compatible with iOS 10; had I not cautioned my parents to contact me before any upgrade, it would have probably bricked their iPad.

Anyone who works at Apple advise how to turn off the iOS 10 upgrade option?

Ok, I'll take your words. If you're absolutely sure it is an iPad 2nd generation and it has downloaded iOS 10, the only thing you can do is to never answer the nag to upgrade when it pops up. This is the first iOS 10 compatibility misdetection that I've heard. It could be a bug.

You can also delete the fully downloaded iOS 10 package. It's somewhere in the settings - manage storage. I don't have my iPad with me so I can't tell the exact location. Then prevent the device from auto downloading iOS by blocking access to mesu.apple.com in your WiFi router settings.

Just for piece of mind of all involved I would reiterate you post the model number found in Settings->General->About->Model

I don't doubt you are sure you have an iPad 2, but just to make sure and avoid any confusion it would be good to positively identify it.

It would be extremely unlikely for the update to download onto an unsupported device.

The Updates are validated against the iPads identification numbers before being offered or downloaded.

Also, (and this is an easy question, too) does this iPad 2 have the long 30 pin dock connector?

That connection will, at least, confirm the possibility that your iPad is either an iPad 2, 3 or 4 models.

Your iPad could be, possibly, an early iPad 4 model.

In 2012, Apple released a limited quantity of iPad 4 models that still had 30 pin dock connections before the iPad 4 shipped later with the smaller, faster lightning connection.

ShagCA et al,

Thank you so much for your replies. It is indeed the iPad 2, A1395 with the old Apple connector. There must have been a bug; I had to reboot the iPad, after re-booting, it took me to iOS 9.3.5 which is the latest for the iPad 2.

This is a completely weird problem I've ever seen with an Apple devices; I did not misread the iOS 10 download earlier; had I seen 9.3.5, I would obviously not asked that question.

In any case, let's close this thread. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to reply and help.

Weird or otherwise, the problem no longer exists.
