MacBook Pro 2013 doesn't shutdown / freezes then black screen

Hi guys –

Shortly after (probably a few weeks) my upgrade to El Capitan, my MacBook Pro 2013 has started to behave very abnormally: each time I was about to shut it down, either by hitting Ctrl + Power or through the Apple Menu, the laptop froze.

By pressing the Power button for a number of seconds, the laptop would force shut down. When I hit the Power button, I no longer hear the 'chimes' and the laptop screen remains black. I could hardly hear the fans, but they are in operation.

The laptop turns back on again when I leave it for a day ⚠ or two...

Any ideas what I could do to fix this?

Greetings Digiwolf,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It seems like the computer will freeze if you try to power it down and gets stuck on a black screen when you try to turn it back on.
There are a couple things we can try to see if we can get it to boot normally. Both of these steps can help us isolate what is causing the issue.
First, since the Mac is not starting up and gets stuck on a black screen, we can reset the SMC.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
We can also try to boot into safe mode to see if there is software that is preventing the computer from shutting down. Once it loads to the desktop see if you can shutdown like normal.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

Thanks for your response, chris_g1. I reset the SMC, however it did nothing... I could here the mild noise of the fans, however there is NO startup sound, I'm afraid... Any other solutions/ideas? 😟
