Hello samharl123,
Thanks for asking about your iPhone charging question here in the Apple Support Communities. I don't know what I would do without my iPhone. When I was traveling, I even had to buy a multi USB charging station for my devices, so I understand the importance of power and portability! From the description of your problem, it sounds like the lightning cable is not seating properly.
Thank you for testing this with multiple cables and letting me know the issue seems to happen with different cables as well. If the Apple official cable that came with the iPhone 7 is loose, or does not stay in the correct place when you plug it in, and the charging stops when (as an example) you put it down on the nightstand and have to jiggle it or readjust it just to make sure it stays charging or starts charging again for you, then the charging port on the iPhone needs to be checked by a certified hardware technician. You can find a service provider using this link: Apple find locations. There may be other options available to you as well, depending on where you are located, when you purchased your iPhone 7, and the status of your warranty. If you wish to ask what options are available to you, please contact an AppleCare Advisor using this link: Contact Apple Support. I know they will assist you professionally and expeditiously.
Thanks again for visiting the Apple Support Communities. Have a great rest of your day.
