It's interesting since my 2015 Sonata was able to connect wirelessly with CarPlay for a few months after it was introduced (to me) but now it requires a cable. The Handoff feature was apparently disabled so that when I select a map location on my iPhone and then plug it into the car it resets itself to Home. Both features of handoff and bluetooth might be being discouraged but they are a game changer in the works. I like it since the mapping feature online if much or uptodate and I can trust them for correct roads her in the DFW market which changes daily.

No, it wasn't able to do that. You are mistaken.
Who told you it supported wireless CarPlay? I'm not aware of a single system on the market from any manufacturer or aftermarket vendor, that offers wireless CarPlay. They all have to be connected via USB for the time being.
TThe cars manual says it does and has instructions on how to pair it via Bluetooth.
It is a 2017 model. Couldn't edit after the fact. Sorry.
You can pair the phone with the head unit using bluetooth, but CarPlay requires a wired connection. Wireless CarPlay was added to iOS as an option back in iOS 8 (I believe), but there are no manufacturers shipping units that support Wireless CarPlay yet. I wouldn't expect to see any in the near future the way things are going. This isn't really a reflection on Apple, it's a matter of the fact that it takes auto makers and aftermarket stereo manufacturers 4-5 years to roll out new products as compared to 1-2 years for Apple (and other cell phone manufacturers).
i'm with you Kilted. i am also under the understanding that CarPlay requires a USB connection.
