Q: Mid 2011 iMac 27 inch (Digital Output not working)

Hello,

I have a iMac mid 2011 27 inch, problem is the sound is greyed out and cannot be controlled or anything. Simply not working. However it works in windows and works when plugged in with a USB headset. People recommended resetting/killing coreaudiod but coreaudiod process does not show on activity monitor and when reset through terminal nothing happens. I have recently replaced the graphics card aswell due to graphic cards issues if that helps with anything. I have went to the console log and this is the errors that came up that is related to coreaudiod this is the log file.

I have tried absolutely everything. It is currently running El captain.

What I have tried so far:

Resetting coreaudiod

Resetting SMC

Resetting PRAM

Cleaned with toothpick and air compressed to make sure not dirt or anything is stuck in there.

No red line shows in audio jack

Reinstalling el captain operating system

Checked if muted buttons are unchecked and indeed they were

Repair disk and file permissions

I am super confused now and have no idea what more can be done. I am trying to avoid putting in a new logic board.

If anybody can help or has encountered this problem i would highly appreciate it if you could help thank you so much and have a good one.

It could be a failing graphic card as that model of iMac has had a recall for that:  iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support.

The recall is good for 4 years from the date of purchase so act quickly if you're still in the window of opportunity.

Then  it should be under the 90 day warranty (or 1 year whichever applies).  Take it in for a free diagnosis.

Hello old toad thank you so much for your help, I have great experience in macs/imacs. I will tell you as to why i believe it is not the video card and rather a software issue. Previously i have bought this imac off my friend it wasnt in working condition (whenever you put into recovery mode and tried to install os on it it would crash and go to a white screen. Therefore i replaced the graphic card myself same model and everything and now works perfectly fine except for the sound now. I have also read lots of posts regarding this specific issue and people were saying you have to play around with the terminal.

IF you could explain to me as to why you believe its a defective graphic card then please let me knon i would highly appreciate it maybe im missing out on little but crucial information. Because to me if it was a defective graphics card then the computer would have been still crashing correct? unless the new graphics card is blocking the signaling to the i/o board?

Also keep in mind its working on windows with no issues at all and when i plug in a usb headset and the Coreaudiod process simply isnt found on activity monitor. Its like its missing or someone deleted it.

    Thank You,

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and see if the problem persists there.  If it doesn't then there may be some 3rd party software that is contributing to the issue.

Thank you so much for your help old toad.

I put it into safe mode but sound does not show up at all on safe mode meaning sound icon is no longer at the menu bar and when i look at the input/output devices none are found. Im assuming its because it only loads the basics and removes kernels and whatnot. Im not quite sure how to test sound in safe mode.
