Q: Finder not working and top menu bar disappears

Hi

I'm running 10.11.6 0n a Mid 2010 Mac and I am having problems with Finder, which stops responding and I cannot quit or relaunch the app. Furthermore the top bar disappears so I cannot click on the apple icon to shut down.

Anybody else with this problem or has a solution.

Thanks

Paul

    Hello paulfromgresford,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding you've been experiencing issues with Finder and the menu bar. I don't go one day without using my Mac. I know Finder and the menu bar are valuable for everyday use. I am happy to help get this resolved with you.

First, I recommend testing this issue in safe mode. This allows your Mac to run certain checks, prevent Startup and Login items, and deletes cache. Follow the steps below to start in safe mode.

    1. Start or restart your Mac.
    2. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
    3. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.

To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

If the issue doesn't occur in safe mode but returns after starting normally, try disabling login items. Use the link below.
OS X El Capitan: If you think you have incompatible login items

If the issue occurs in safe mode, it's possible that user specific settings or files are the cause. In this case, I recommend testing this with a different user account. Please use the steps and additional information in the link below for further assistance.

    Have a fantastic day!
