Sep 19, 2016 2:06 PM in response to Moosëby sberman,You have some very old software ... in a nutshell, that is your issue.
"Preview version 5.5.3 ...". The current Preview version is 8.1.
"... running [OS X]version 10.7.5." The current OS X version is 10.11.6 (until Sept. 20, when a major OS X upgrade will be released).
If your MacBook Pro is from mid 2007 or later, it can run OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). You should install it as follows:
Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support
The issue is that the current version of iTunes (12.5.1), which is required to communicate to iOS 10 devices, requires at least OS X 10.9.5.
Now that you have let at least four years elapse without upgrading OS X, expect more issues, such as iPhoto no longer being supported, and Photos having been introduced about eighteen months ago.

Sep 19, 2016 4:59 PM in response to sbermanby Moosë,Thank you very much, sberman, for your response. I never neglected to update software throughout the years, starting with Tiger. The issue is that Apple Support/software updates will NOT allow any more OS X cats (and iTunes) upgrades beyond Lion version 10.7.5 on my mid 2007 MacBook Pro, still a finely operating machine. Why urge to upgrade iphone without at least a warning that devices/iCloud, at some point in time, would not to talk to each other forever again? Upgrading is NOT always necessarily the best course of action. Now I cannot get my iphone backups.

Yes it is. Security and bugs fixes are important to the wellbeing of your Mac.
Hackers depend on user being lazy and use known exploits. Who knows you might be one of the zombies.

Sep 19, 2016 5:10 PM in response to Moosëby KiltedTim,There will have been 5 Major releases of OS X after yours as of tomorrow. If your machine can't go beyond 10.7.5, it's time to seriously consider a new machine.
The only other way around this for you will be to install Windows 7 (or later) using BootCamp or in a Virtual Machine (VirtualBox is free) and install the current version of iTunes on Windows to sync with your phone and manage content.

This is not true!
If you truly have a mid-2007 MacBook Pro with at least 2GB RAM and 8.8GB of storage, then per the article I attached above, indeed you may upgrade to OS X El Capitan. Perhaps you misstated something about your equipment.

Sep 19, 2016 5:40 PM in response to sbermanby deggie,Their subject says they have a Mac Pro, not a MacBook Pro. If that is true then they cannot update.

Sep 19, 2016 5:46 PM in response to deggieby sberman,That must be it ... thanks!
@Moosë said "MacBook Pro" in two statements: The original post and later again in the second post.
But I think you found the explanation. Thanks, that did not occur to me.
