Apple TVThe Apple TV can be on wifi or ethernet, it makes no difference. They do however need to be on the same network.

Sep 19, 2016 3:20 PM in response to Winston Churchillby M Corey Head,It's definitely the same network! The older iTunes Remote app can activate and operate the AppleTV just fine...but the new app doesn't pair and can't see the device. Any options?

Apple TVHave you tried restarting everything including the router.

Sep 19, 2016 3:31 PM in response to Winston Churchillby M Corey Head,Yes--in order, I restarted the router, the Apple TV and then my iPhone. Same results. It's strange since they ARE able to communicate via the older iTunes Remote app. I can control and type using that app on the same Apple TV, but the NEW Apple TV Remote app can't find it and the Apple TV can't find my iPhone or iPad.
(Thanks for your replies, by the way!!)

Apple TVIt should be fine if the older remote app works, but check it's on the same network using the IP address, sometimes a router can determine the wifi and ethernet to be different networks. The first three sets of numbers should be the same (e.g. 192.168.1.34 and 192.168.1.147)

Apple TVI wonder if something in your router settings is causing a problem.

Sep 19, 2016 4:37 PM in response to Winston Churchillby M Corey Head,No--that isn't it. I have an Airport Extreme--latest version. It's got the latest firmware as well. I don't have any special settings other than a few NAT stuff pointed inward for the network. None of that should be causing an issue with pairing through wifi. Everything's on the same subnet. As an experiment, I tried unplugging the ethernet cable and setting up wifi on the Apple TV. Same exact network as my iPhone and still nothing shows up.
At this point, I think Apple broke something last week in the update. Maybe there will be a fix soon.

Apple TVI have a phone running iOS 10 and an Apple TV 4 with iOS 10 on Ethernet, it isn't broken for me.

Sep 19, 2016 5:12 PM in response to Winston Churchillby M Corey Head,OK...called Apple support just to see if there was something I was missing. There wasn't. Suddenly, it shows up in my iPhone app while I'm on the line with tier 2 support. It still never showed up on the Apple TV under Pairable devices, but it's connected now. Unfortunately I can't really say what changed--other than it works now. AND the Apple TV is on Ethernet and not wifi.
Thanks for the help!

Apple TVintermittent issues are usually the result of interference.

Sep 20, 2016 3:36 AM in response to M Corey Headby Diana.McCall,Hi. Just to clarify, the Remote app does not show up on Apple TV as a pairable device. You start the Remote app and it searches for Apple TVs, similar to how AirPlay works. You select one and the TV displays a code that you enter on the app. See Set up the Apple TV Remote app - Apple Support.
