Q: turn off wi-fi when not on a wi-fi network?

I've noticed that my download speeds are affected if wi-fi is on and I'm not connected to a wi-fi network.  Is it necessary to turn wi-fi off and on, switching between the two depending on whether or not one is using cellular vs. wi-fi?

Is it necessary to turn Wi-Fi off and on?  Probably not.  I'm sure many folks do not do this.  I do, however.

There is clearly work the iPhone will do if Wi-Fi is on and, say, you're driving past places many of which emit Wi-Fi signals.  The iPhone will sense this and figure out if it's a known network, etc.  I'm sure there is not one right or wrong answer, but I turn off Wi-Fi when I'm not using it to improve the efficiency and battery use of my iPhone.

I never turn either wifi or Bluetooth off. I don't want to have to bother with flipping those on and off.  Never noticed any issues with performance or battery life by leaving them on all the time. I also don't want the nags about wifi being off if I use something accessing location services, and I do have wifi calling and my phone does use that in my home and place of work.
