The red number of missed calls wont go away
ONce you had gone into the screen with the calls listed and gone back out, the number would go away. How does it go away now.

Are you sure its not also indicating that you have a voicemail?
IF not hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the device to boot back up.
