CarPlay problems after iOS 10 Update

Ever since iOS 10 my CarPlay functions have been very glitchy, mostly when I got navigation going on at the same time. Here's a few things I encounter:

  • Music freezes (can't change songs, can't tap into the app if I tap out of it, icon zooms in once it gets past freezing)
  • Siri mutes herself when reading texts (only seems to happen when I listen to a text straight from a notification
  • CarPlay itself randomly disconnects for a couple seconds at a time (although it MAY be my wire but it has yet to show any tears)

Also some other pet peeves from BEFORE iOS 10 that are still happening now with Music:

Some radio station genres found in Apple Music on iPhone/iPad/Mac are not listed in CarPlay

Anyone else w/ CarPlay suffering from these problems?

Here's the fix I found that worked for my wife's iPhone 6 with 10.2 with the with "not recognize" issue.


Turn your phone to airplane mode, then connect it to AirPlay via the USB.


In my case, it recognized the phone, I turned the car off and unconnected the iPhone from the USB. I then turned Airplane mode off, reconnected the USB and turned the car on and it worked.

I resolved the issue by turning the iPhone 6 to Airplane mode, connecting the USB, turning the car on and going through the Airplay recognition/setup process. This resolved the "device not recognized problem". I turned the car off, turned off Airplane mode and the phone connected to airplay. I also followed the setup process that automatically appears on the iPhone screen as I went through the Airplane mode setup process.

So I'm having almost all the issues mentioned on this page. I have an iPhone 6s and it hasn't connected to my 2013 Honda Accord Sport for the last week. It all started with my Pandora disconnecting after every song and then reconnecting. Then it a couple days later it stopped connecting all together. My car came with Pandora already installed when I bought it. I can play Pandora via my Bluetooth option but the Pandora option can't/won't communicate with my car. It says it either is having trouble communicating or that the devide is not supported. It's off bc I'm not even connecting through an iPhone cord. Anyway, I also notice I can't use CarPlay to call anyone bc it can't connect to my phone book or any contact list. So now I'm stuck not being able to use the Pandora option that came with my car and calling anyone unless I start the call with my actual iPhone.


I thought the iOS update would work, it didn't. The Pandora app update didn't work. I tried un-installing the app and reinstalling. I un-paired my phone with my car and then re-paired the phone and that didn't work. I've gone through all the forums and message boards and tried all the resolutions and nothing worked. I did try to go to the Setting>Retrictions resolution mentioned above and that didn't work either. I messaged Pandora and they are looking at it, which I'm sure won't solve much. I emailed a manage at Honda to see if there is a firmware update but haven't heard anything back. It so frustrating bc you pay to have these types of amentinites at your fingertips and then it simply goes away. I really hope something can be done by one of the companies. Apple?

As of yesterday, same issues as above. In short, Honda Civic 2016 with CarPlay + iPhone 6 + iOS 10.2.1 = no CarPlay working. I have (1) disconnected USB and tried same USB (2) tried 4 other USBs (3) deleted the Bluetooth connection and re-paired (4) enabled and disabled CarPlay restrictions (5) reset Network Settings (6) reset all Settings (7) restored phone from backup (8) called Apple Support and (9) called Honda today to request an appointment re: firmware update for the head-unit, although I suspect it's an Apple vs. Honda issue. ERG! I loved CarPlay until yesterday!

I have the same car (Civic 2016) by any chance is your Apple Music library a large library (10,000+)? I ask because mine is so i turned off iCloud Music Library and removed all songs and the problem stopped happening. I been researching this issue and it isn't just a Honda civic issue it seems related to CarPlay overall. Let me know if it solves your issue as well.

I worked with Apple's Tier 1 support staff testing this and the issue was identified. The problem is in Honda's software and you are correct in that it's tied to iCloud Music Library with large libraries. If you disable iCloud Music Library, it should work fine. I have found that disabling iCloud Music library and then re-enabling it will allow it to work well for a while before it starts acting up again. Simply disabling iCloud Music Library fixes it again for a while.


Apple is working with Honda to implement the fix in a firmware update. Unfortunately it will require taking your car to the dealership for them to fix.

I confirm (as have others) a large Apple Music Library is definitely (one of) the culprits for CarPlay being flaky. Not sure what constitutes large (mine is 35000+) but it seems as if 10000 causes it too. Bummer!


I haven't tried using CarPlay for about a month and instead have used Bluetooth for all my iPhone based audio needs - although I'd prefer to use CarPlay. Hopefully Apple / Honda (and others) resolve it soon.

Here is what else I found worked (most of the time...)


Before connecting your iPhone to CarPlay, turn your iPhone off and back on again and then connect it to CarPlay once it has restarted completely. When I did that and my iPhone 6+ was in a "clean" state, CarPlay was much more stable versus when it was in a "dirty" state and it would "crash" all the time. This restarting workaround was typically a "one and done" solution in my case - meaning that if I exited the car with my iPhone and later returned that it was be screwed up again.


While the above worked for me most of the time, disabling my 35000+ track Apple Music Library definitely worked AND just made CarPlay itself feel like it was faster and worked better.


Hoping this is resolved soon.

I have a 2017 Camaro as well, and I've been ripping my hair out trying to get CarPlay to work again. I've been told by  that the problem is on the Chevy side, and Chevy has told me that the problem is on the  side.


Did you also have problems with your phone disconnecting and reconnecting to Bluetooth? That's another issue I'm having. Dealers near me just say "oh well; we don't know what to do".

Start your car, turn on your radio, go to iTunes and play a song. Then plug in your iPhone. CarPlay eventually recognizes the phone and connects. Works the same with Maps. This was the only thing that worked for me after trying everything in this thread. The guy that figured it out said it's a pain in the neck, and it is, but it will have to do for now until Apple updates the os.

I've heard others mention this but I have had no luck using this technique but we might be having different problems / symptoms. No matter what I try I ultimately end up with "No Device Connected" displaying on my headunit within 2-3 minutes of plugging in my iPhone 6+.
