Q: Latest Software Update - 10.0.1

The latest software upgrade sent over the network to my phone today is doing way too much, and now my phone has become unresponsive to clicking phone options, i.e., Favorites, Recents, Contacts, Keypad, Voicemail.  Sounds have changed, messages from Facebook Messenger have changed, the way I get to my passcode has changed; what else could go wrong with this update and can I go back to the previous one?

"Sounds have changed ...".  Yes, that did happen in iOS 10.

Anyway, the items you mention that sound like defects may well be due to your iPhone's storage being too full.

Check Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage and be certain you have absolutely no less (and hopefully much more) than 10% of your iPhone's total storage free.

Not even close (33 GB left)!  Look, I know when a software update screws things up, and I'm just letting everybody know this update is doing too much & is messed up.  This phone is not even a month old, either!

Many of the things that you described were features. Sounds have changed, keyboard sounds have changed, the lock sound has changed. The method that you get to the passcode has changed, Notifications has changed, how you access the camera from the lock screen has changed. All of those are features that have been introduced in iOS 10.0.1. I've not experienced any issues with my iPhone 6s, nor my iPad Mini 4.

You cannot go back to the previous one, Apple does not support downgrading.

If you still think that you have issues, then you can perform user troubleshooting, restart, reset, restore from backup, restore to factory; testing after each step.

Well, that's just crazy stuff to do considering the software upgrade is causing all this, not my phone!  Everything was fine before that update.  And, have Apple updates caused problems on people's phones before?  YOU BET THEY HAVE!  Considering everything they did that you might not have even mentioned, it was just too much!  Short of all that nonsense, I did turn it off and back on, and I'm calling software upgrade support tomorrow to complain.  You may not have the same configuration I do, nor the same phone.  Anyway...

It is difficult to tell exactly what your problems are, since you are also complaining about changes in features. You seem to think that feature changes are a problem with the software, and that is not the case. People here are willing to assist you with troubleshooting your device, but you need to separate feature changes from actual problems. Your are more than welcome to contact Apple Support if you would rather, but again, not everything you describe here is a problem with iOS.

I don't know or care whether it's the feature additions that have caused those buttons not to work properly or the IOS.  And, as a retired software developer, I know when too many changes are made in software updates, quite frequently, something gets broken that wasn't broken before lots of multiple changes were made at one time. Supposedly, Apple will be calling me in a few hours, so I'll just deal with them.  Have a nice day!

What buttons? You do not indicate buttons, especially since there is only one on the phone. I never indicated that features caused problems, I said most of what you were describing were features, not problems. If you have an iOS issue, you need to troubleshoot that by reinstalling the software, especially if you are experiencing issues with operations. But being a retired software developer you would know that.

I mentioned them in the beginning ... the "Phone" icons.  Intermittently, when I click on any of them, they don't do anything!

These are not problems. They are new features:

Sounds have changed, messages from Facebook Messenger have changed, the way I get to my passcode has changed.

Other than that, I agree with you that sluggishness is not part of expected result. I also agree with you that not all users experience problem free upgrade.

Have you tried a force restart?

When you say Phone icons, I'm guessing you mean others than just Phone. In that case, you need to follow the general troubleshooting steps I provided in my earlier post. If you cannot troubleshoot the device, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store and ask them for assistance.

Don't know what force restart means; I've turned the phone completely off, waited a few minutes, and turned it back on.  But I did explain the icons that don't do anything when I press on them lightly, medium-touch, or more forcefully ... Favorites, Recent, Contacts, Keypad, and Voicemail.  That NEVER happened before this update.

What you mention here is a restart. A force restart, which is what was called a reset, is holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone reboots. Test. Then if necessary restore from backup, test; restore to factory, test. Those are the user troubleshooting steps.

Will do the force restart, but have had bad experiences with the backup thing, and I'm not restoring from my last backup or I'll lose a bunch of stuff.  Sometimes these updates corrupt things, and if I do a backup and then restore, it may not do anything.  This has happened to me before.  Anyway, Apple should be calling me shortly.  Thanks for the advice, Chris!

    Just downgraded to iOS 10.0.1.

First I lost my cell carrier and had "no service" (restored with a reboot) and now I can't move my icons anymore.  They don't quiver anymore to indicate that they can be moved.  Reboot and hard reset have not fixed this issue.
