Screen broke out of nowhere??

Alright so I'm typing this on my iPad right now because i don't want there to be any more damage to my phone. As I was in school today giving a Spanish report, I just heard this huge crack. I was standing, putting no pressure on my phone, and when I checked it it was cracked. I've had my phone for 1 month, a 6+, and never dropped it once. My guess is that the screen might have been defected from the start or something? Idk, but I spent all the money I had saved up on that phone so I don't have nearly enough to pay to get it repaired. Would Apple repair my phone for free? Because I'm not sure if it was a defective screen but from what I've read it seems like it. Thanks 🙂
