Q: Safari and Microsoft not responding - MacBook Pro slow

I am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. My MacBook Pro is a 2013 model although new (got it end of last year). I'm using Microsoft Office 365. Over the last few months my speed has declined and is becoming frustrating. Often, I have apps not responding for both Apple and Microsoft. It takes forever to get them closed and restarted, often times I have to do this over or shut everything down and start again. The guys at the Mac store said I need to upgrade some internal components (I'm not a techie so I have no idea what they are). Is there anything else I can do from my side. We have already done a 'hard reinstall' or something like that where they rebooted the whole machine and then used my backup to put everything back. Any help would be appreciated. I'm going to be super busy over the next few months and need to make sure everything works. Also, when I try to synch my phone (iPhone 6 Plus) with iTunes it stops responding.
