Q: Is there a way to avoid uploading the RAW in a RAW+Jpeg pair?

Hello everyone

I love the way Photos (and formerly Aperture) handles RAW+Jpeg files. I think it's unique and currently no other software does it in the same way.

For those who don't know how it works: it shows the RAW+Jpeg pair a single file, defaulting to Jpeg for viewing. This workflow works perfectly for me, as the Jpegs from my camera (a Fujifilm) are great, and when I need to edit them, I switch to RAW to get the full editing potential.

The problem is that the RAW files are pretty big, and I don't really need them to be synced. They're also backupped by Time Machine, so I don't want them on my iCloud. They'll soon fill up my account and I'll end up paying more than I want.

So what I'm searching is an easy way to avoid uplading the RAW to iCloud photo Library. I think it could be a nice toggle switch in the new Photos App.

Have a good day

It would definitely be nice, but there is no way to sync only selected items from your Photos Library to iCloud, unless you move them to a different Photos Library.

A brute force method to keep selected photos only local would be to import them as referenced, since referenced images cannot upload to iCloud, but that would not work for RAW&JPEG pairs, since you want to keep them paired. And referenced images are not as well supported in Photos as in Aperture, so I would avoid them (Disadvantages of a Referenced Library in Photos).

    Thanks léonie for the reply.

Another workaround I was thinking is to import only the Jpeg in Photos, importing the RAW somewhere on my hard drive, and when I need editing, import only that particular RAW and edit it.

This also solves my issue (only a portion of RAWs gets uploaded) but it's far less elegant than the original solution.

It would depend on how frequently you need to work with the RAW files. The JPEGs from my camera are usually so good that I do not need the RAW files, only, if the lighting conditions have been very pooor, high contrast and noisy dark areas. Then I need the original RAW files. I do not import them to my Photos Library, but keep them separate until I need them.

Currently that is not possible - suggest to APple as you are not the first to ask - http://www.apple.com/feedback/

My personal view is that if you want RAW then shoot RAW - if you want JPEG then shoot JPEG - shooting both to me is a waste of time and storage and complicates work flows and I see no (or at best a very tiny) advantage to shooting both and then worrying about getting rid of one
