Is the iPad 3rd generation compatible with iOS 10? I would lIke to upgrade, primarily to use the new Maps app. I've seen some sites state that it is possible to upgrade a 3rd gen iPad. If not, is there a way to download just the Maps app.

Mac mini (Late 2012): OS 10.12.6 Sierra and Numbers 4.3 and 2.3 (2 x Numbers app)
What I want to do: Edit a Number file on both iPad and Mac
A six months ago I was able to do it but now I cannot for some reason. I think a slight automatic update of both Numbers (Mac and iPad) is causing this problem. Like you mentioned, this iPad cannot have iOS 10, or a newer version of Numbers for iOS like version 3,,,, Any suggestions will be appreciated it.
At some point all older iPads are not going to every single app update in the store.
My iPad 2 and 3 models are STILL getting plenty iOS app updates under iOS 9.3.5.
The iOS Excel 360 app didn’t let you download an older compatible version when you tried to purchase/download it?

iOS 9.3.5 is STILL, CURRENTLY, being supported, but with the recent introduction/release of iOS 11, look for support on iOS 9.3.5 to disappear sooner than later.
All the last updated apps on old iOS 9.3.5 iDevices will still work, but will be their last app updates.
Yes, iPad 3 gen is compatible with iOS 10. You can update it.
No it is NOT!
iPad 2, 3 and the 1st gen. iPad Mini are NOT eligible for iOS 10.
The hardware and CPU in these incompatible models are all the same and not capable of running even the most basic of features of iOS 10.
The iPad 4, with lightning connector, is the only qualifying older iPad model that is compatible with iOS 10.

As has been stated TWICE, the iPad 3 IS NOT compatible nor eligible for installing iOS 10.
The iPad 2, 3 and 1st generation iPad Mini are all ineligible and excluded from upgrading to iOS 10.
They all share similar hardware architectures and a less powerful 1.0 Ghz CPU that Apple has deemed insufficiently powerful enough to even run the basic, barebones features of iOS 10.
Why would you want to upgrade, anyways?
Since iOS 8, older iPad models such as the iPad 2, 3 and 4 have only been getting the most basic of iOS features.
Older iPad users get none of the newest and coolest cutting edge features that newer model iDevices, with better hardware specs, can handle with more aplomb.
Plus, these are the only two supported models left that use the much outdated 30 pin dock connector.
FYI,
Just because your iPad 3 is no longer able to upgrade to the latest iOS doesn't mean youriPad 3 is suddenly useless.
Your iPad 3 will work as it always has and the apps you have installed on it will continue to update and receive some level of app updates relevent to your current iOS.
You have had four years of iOS upgrades and updates.
Your iPad 3 will still do everything it does now and you will, get, at least, another full year, perhaps two, if you decide to you want to wait longer to get a new or newer iPad model.
I just needed to put that out there for you.
Your iPad 3 is NOT suddenly becoming obsolete.

I wanted to use the new version of Maps. I can use my phone with the new upgrade to iOS but I am limited on data on the phone. On the iPad, I have an unlimited data account with ATT, because I bought an original iPad and I'm grandfathered in. BTW, the original iPad still works quite well. So I'll just keep my 3rd gen iPad and not worry about the iOS updates. I am happy with it and it's not worth getting a new iPad.
Never mind....
I really think it comes down to a version incompatibility issue, now.
