Q: Mid 2010 27" iMac running slow

I have a mid 2010 27" iMac and it is running super slow.  I use it for work purposes ( internet, document drafting, timekeeping, etc.., not gaming) and with every software upgrade it runs slower and slower.  I have over 600GB free in storage and 2 memory slots ( which accepts 1333 MHz DDR3) available.  How do I make it run faster and respond quicker, like it use to? Do I need to have the Hard Drive replaced?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

I doubt you need to have the hard drive replaced. What you DO need to do is figure out what's slowing the computer down...and that is usually applications running in the background.

First, let's see what is starting up with the computer: click system preferences > users and groups > login items. Everything in that list starts at the same time the computer starts, and runs in the background. Unless you need those programs to run from the get-go, you can just edit that list down to nothing - or very few programs.

Next, balance what you're doing: document drafting and internet together is fine...add in a video running on screen and an app installing and a backup being created and another user dropping files into your drop box, etc etc etc and you can see why the computer would run slowly.
