Q: imessage effects can be received but not sent

On my old iPhone 6 Plus I had a problem where I could send iMessage effects, but not receive them. I resolved this by disabling Reduced Motion and by signing into iMessage (somehow I'd been using my phone for ages while being signed out of that!).

Today my iPhone 7 Plus arrived and I now have the opposite problem - I can receive the effects but I can't send them. When I click and hold on the Blue arrow after a few seconds the screen goes blurry except for the text I've just written. I get no menu showing me the various effect options.

Any ideas what is causing this? I've tried toggling Reduced Motion on and off, iMessage on and off, signing out of iMessage and back in again but none of that has made a difference.

    Howdy porrig!

It's always exciting to have a new iPhone. I'm thrilled to hear you have the iPhone 7 Plus! Sending iMessages with message effects is a fantastic new feature of iOS 10. You're in the right place for help.

Your new iPhone 7 Plus has the ability to detect different levels of pressure when being used. This feature is called 3D Touch. You might notice additional options when firmly pressing on apps, for example, because of this feature.

In this case, it sounds like you're using the correct process to send the message effect, but the blue arrow might require a firmer touch than you're currently using. Try to use a firmer touch on the blue arrow to see if the message options appear.

If this resolves the issue for you but you'd like to adjust the firmness needed to see those options, check out this resource:

Change 3D Touch sensitivity on your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus

The resource does apply to your iPhone 7 Plus, too!

    Take care!

    Hi,

Thanks - 3D Touch is new to me so I didn't realise I needed to press a little harder. I contacted Apple Support on Twitter and their suggestion was to restore the phone!

I'm so happy I waited till this morning and saw your reply - you've saved me several hours of faffing around!

    Cheers,

    porrig.
