iPhone 6 iOS 10 is not recognized by Win10Pro laptop

After upgrading to iOS 10 on my iPhone 6, it is no longer being recognized as an external drive by my Win10Pro x64 laptop on either the USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports. New cable is being used to eliminate that as an issue.

Why is this happening?

Do I need to go back to the latest iOS 9.x.x?

Is there and new driver I need to download onto my PC?

I am set to automatically backup to iCloud, but I want to import photos directly to my PC.

Thanks

Vicki

Yes, iTunes updated this past Monday to ver. 12.5.1.21

iTunes is not the issue.

The camera roll in my phone contains over 700 photos.
My phone is not being recognized in Windows Explorer as an external drive as it was in iOS 9.4.3 and earlier.
Is there a setting in iOS10 that was changed by default it allowing it to be recognized as an external drive? Is there some new firewall built in iOS10 only allowing it to work with iTunes?

If this cannot be fixed, how do I roll back to iOS 9.4.3?

I have had iPhones since the first iPhone in 2007. If this is some new underhanded trick by Apple to try to force me to use only iTunes and not allow other uses/programs such as Windows to import, this iPhone 6 will be my last

My iPhone running iOS 10.0.1 shows in Explorer as before, so clearly there isn't some general policy to prevent access via Windows. Note however that iOS devices have only ever exposed the camera roll directly. Third party tools are required to reach the rest of the file system. I cannot say for certain that manually reinstalling the driver will resolve things for you, but it is something that I would try if I were in your shoes. It cannot do any harm.

I have the same setup and the same problem. I've done the same things. I just uninstalled the driver, but Windows re-installed saying it was the latest driver for the device. Under devices, the driver is listed as USB iphone. But, when I connect the iphone there is no icon for it under the This PC display. iTunes still finds the phone, so it is connected; but Windows no longer lists it as a device, so I can't open the DCIM folder - which I've always been able to do - to access the photos on the camera. Has Apple removed support for accessing the DCIM folder directly? If so, that would be very annoying...

No, that doesn't help. I've also now tried this on an old Windows 95 platform, and that still recognizes the iPhone, but says that the camera roll is empty (it isn't). Clearly, ios 10 is doing SOMETHING different, and it's not working properly with various flavors of Windows. I've been regularly transferring my pictures to my Windows system for over a year with no problems under ios 9.
