Q: iOS 10 update on iPhone 5s -- messages magically disappear after sent and received

After updating my iPhone 5s to iOS 10.0.1 yesterday, I have been having a messages problem, much like others who also upgraded. However, I haven't seen anyone else post about this particular issue.

Once the update completed, I noticed that my messages app had all my conversations still there -- but with nothing in them.  That is, I could see who I had been talking with, but there were no messages in any of the threads.  When I send messages, the status bar hangs about 3/4 of the way through, even though messages (SMS & iMessages alike) are being sent.  And when I received messages, I get no notification on my phone.  New messages initiated by another person don't even show up on my phone, but everything (even SMS messages) will appear in my laptop's Messages app.  And, finally, after some arbitrary period of time has passed (anywhere from an hour to a couple of minutes), my messages clear themselves once again.

Anyone else having this problem?

Other issues I have had since the upgrade include my phone blue screening and randomly restarting itself, as well as extreme lagginess.

    Hello stephnado,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that since updating your iPhone 5s to iOS 10,  you've been experiencing issues with missing message threads and unexpected restarting. Some of the most important content in my phone is in my messages. I'd be very concerned if I my threads were blank. I am here to help.

First, I recommend resetting all settings. This takes all settings back to default, including Wi-Fi networks and passwords, alerts, notifications, brightness, wallpaper, and sounds. Even though no content is lost with this step, it is a good idea to back up first. Please use the link below for assistance with backing up.
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Once you've successfully backed up, reset all settings in Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. If the issues persist, restore the iPhone with iTunes. This can resolve many unexpected behaviors. Restoring will remove all content and reinstall the software. Again, it's important to back up your content if you haven't already. Follow the steps in the link below to restore with iTunes.
Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

    Have an amazing day!
