Please provide more information. What OS X and version of iTunes are you using? Were you updating iTunes? We need to know as much info as possible to offer you a solution.

I have no idea what OS X is. I recently purchased a new Dell PC and have downloaded the latest version of iTunes (twice). I don't understand why it should be this complicated. No wonder most people stream music on services such as Pandora and Spotify.

Are you using Apple music? If so, go to preferences in iTunes and make sure that Apple Music and iCloud music library is checked.
