Q: I have a 2008 macbook

Mac OS x

Version 10.5.8

Processor 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

 

and when I try to update the software it says its already up to date, but when I go to certain websites its says my browser is no longer supported with the version of safari that I have. Can anyone explain how I can update the software or should I take it to apple?

You have the 13" Aluminum Late 2008 MacBook. This MacBook was introduced in Oct. 2008 and was discontinued in Jun. 2009. It is also model number: A1278

 

The original version of OS X that came with it was: OS X Leopard 10.5.5. It should be upgradeable up to OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

    What exact model is your MacBook? There are a number of models that came out in 2008.

     

    The basic issue is that the version of OS X you are running can only support a much older version of Safari. You would have to update the operating system in order to upgrade to a newer version of Safari. Again, depending on the exact model of your MacBook, upgrading OS X may be limited.

     

    The other option is to install another web browser, like Google Chrome, or FireFox to name a few to see if either of these will allow you to access those websites properly.

    How do I go about upgrading it? should I just take it to an apple store for them to do?

    If you have an Apple Store nearby, just make an appointment with the Genius Bar and they will help you with the upgrade.

     

    Or, you can do it yourself. Regardless, be sure to make backups of any important files. It would also be smart to update your Time Machine backups (if you use it) and get a USB drive to make a clone copy of your MacBook's internal drive. This way you always have a means to recover if anything should go wrong.

    There is some upgrade info in this Apple Support article, which

    should show you a link to get a download installer for El Capitan

    if the computer is running Snow Leopard or later, and can access

    the Mac App Store online. Note if you mouse-over blue text, the

    browser shows the web page URL for in-article Apple content.

     

    • Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

     

    If your computer is not yet running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, the trip

    to the Apple store where a genius may help, could make it a bit

    easier because they could install the 10.6.8, so to transition to a

    most recent OS X for the model; and install 10.11.6 El Capitan.

    {Later application upgrades likely will be required.}
