Disable Apple Pay constantly asking me to enter a credit card

I just updated my iPhone 6 Plus to 10.0.0.1, and aside from the minor and needless changes to the lock screen, I am periodically getting a notification from the Wallet App to add a credit card.

I have never and will never use Apple Pay. I don't care how secure it may be, or how convenient it may be I have no desire to use that feature and I am getting tired of seeing the notification pop up 5 times a day. I have looked through the settings and can't find anything about disabling anything to do with the wallet. Is there a way to disable and turn that off or is this another case of Apple telling people what they should really be doing with their phone?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 10

mwoodhead,

I feel your pain... I came here looking for answers to the exact same problem. Not only have I just upgraded ios's but also to a brand new iPhone.

I followed Brenden's answer and was reminded of the only fix that has ever worked for me and the fix I always use to stop any notifications.

First go to 'Settings', then 'Notifications', scroll down and tap on 'Wallet'. Now this is the most important part... Do Not close 'Allow Notifications'! You must close EVERYTHING first. Scroll down to the bottom (Wallet Options), turn off Show Previews, then move up to 'Alert style when unlocked' and choose None. Continue up turning off 'Show On Lock Screen', 'Badge App Icon' & 'Show In Notification Center' as you go. Then after everything is turned off, turn off 'Allow Notifications' at the top.

I used to follow Apple's suggestion of just turning off 'Allow Notifications' but it never worked. My games still sent me notifications with it off. After I started shutting everything down it solved the problem.

Good Luck! :-)

Howdy mwoodhead,

It sounds like you are getting excessive prompts to set up Apple Pay on your phone daily. That's certainly unexpected. You can always disable Wallet Notifications in Settings > Notifications. Now, to troubleshoot the issue, I would start by forcing the Wallet, and the Settings apps to close if they are open:

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then restart the phone and test it out for a bit:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Nope. I put a boarding pass in my wallet. ADD A CREDIT CARD blocks the boarding pass from being use by covering up the USEFUL information (the boarding pass) with USELESS information to add a card. I don't use it for paying, nor will I. I'd like to use it for boarding passes, but will print the **** things before I us iPay. So - how do I get that obnoxious popup off my wallet screen?

In iOS 11.2, you don't even have to put in a fake CC #. After you click the reminder/nag bubble asking you to complete your setup, just click the link at the bottom of the Set up Apple Pay/Wallet screen that says "Set up later in wallet..." and the red reminder bubble on the settings page will go away.

I did the same thing for Face ID on my iPhone X (still prefer passcode) and the nag to set up Face ID disappeared as well.

Hope this helps.

Had the same problem and think I’ve figured out a fix

Click set up Apple Pay/finish through the Setting option, ask to put in card details manually, then put in a 16 digit fake number e.g. 1234 1234 1234 1235 and click enter

It rejects it and says card isn’t elgible for apply pay. Click set up later.

Also hide all wallet notifications through Notifications.

Haven’t had any prompts since.

Let me know if this works for others.

Same situation here - the only difference is that the HUGE ANNOYANCE started with the upgrade to iOS 11. So, it's not even Wallet to notify (bug) me all the time, it's the OS - in addition of the "dialog box" notification, I have a badge icon alert on the Settings app icon.

I would even use Apple Pay, the problem is that none of my cards are enabled to work with it (in Italy it's just a few banks so far).

I stopped using wallet for the same reason. Previously I actually succumbed to the pressure and added a credit card. But I found the application doesn’t really work right anymore. The credit card always comes first and it’s hard to get to the boarding passes I want. So if anyone has an idea about another application like wallet I’d love to hear it. I’m just leaving my settings with the notification telling me I’m supposed finish setting it up my iPhone.

Thank u for the link Jonathan! I tried disabling my wallet using instructions in the comment above but it did not work for me, so I turned my Wallet settings back on b/c I DO want notifications for my wallet. So no luck finding a way to disable, but I did submit a request using the link above and posted this (SEE BELOW). Feel free to copy and paste if you want to send them a request as well ...highly recommend as the more users who do the better the odds something gets done about it.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to address my concern. I am not alone in this concern and many (quite possibly most) of your loyal iPhone customers would like to have the option to NOT connect to Apple Pay. We understand Apple Pay may not be as well-known or as understood yet as would be ideal, and we understand that it has many wonderful benefits including awesome security features, and we also understand that “forcing” customers to use it OR be continuously bombarded with alerts and messages and notifications about it might assist in getting more people to recognize it - but forcing iPhone users to “finish setting up our phones” by connecting to Apple Pay seems unfair and With all due respect this new tactic is a bit gross. Please give us a choice to say no. Thank you!

I had the same aggravating problem. I finally clicked on the the message and it disappeared and did not return. I did not have to enter any credit card info. I can't recall what the message said but maybe "SUBMIT" or "Continue".

There must be some people at Apple that have strange reasoning.

Just trying to respond to your post became a PIA. They sent an authorization code to my phone so I could sign in.I am already on an authorized iMac. then they treat the sign in as a new computer and I have to say that Safari is safe to use.

This process is becoming rubbish.

Anyhow, good luck and I hope your grief is eliminated.

Thanks MWoodhead, I followed what you said with shutting off each option & then notification in settings but there was also a Wallet & Apple Pay app so I also shut it down the same way but I still had the 1 over notifications in settings, so I clicked back on settings update & up popped the notice with the set up Apple pay again so I clicked on it & it started doing the update (& I saw that the 1 over notifications finally disappeared) & up came the pop up with set up now or a set up later options which I clicked on & problem was finally fixed but only after the 1 over notifications was gone! Thanks for the help & hope I helped a little bit too.
