Q: I can't enable auto Unlock on my MacBook Pro.

Hi there,

I wanted to get the auto unlock feature running on my MBP, but the checkbox doesn't appear in the security settings. (I have tried nearly everything but nothing works)

I'm using a 15" Retina MBP (early 2013) running Mac OS Sierra and an Apple Watch Series 2 running WatchOS 3.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), macOS Sierra (10.12)

I'm having the same problem with Early 2013 MacBook Pro.

The Auto Unlock from Apple Watch checkbox isn't appearing at all. This is lame. It shouldn't matter what flavor of Wifi your Macbook supports to use this feature.

You have to turn off 2-STEP (at appleid.apple.com) and then turn on 2-FACTOR, which is under iCloud prefs. You have to turn that on in your phone and your mac, both.

After that, confirm at appleid.apple.com which security you have. If you have 2-FACTOR on, it'll say.

So turns out by 2013 they mean mid 2013 not early 2013 models so the updated 13 inch mbp from 2013 and up, even though the early 2013 mbps have bluetooth 4.0 and are fully capable of handling it. Really crappy imo for them to do that, hopefully will fix it soon and let all bluetooth 4.0 macs use it

    Macbook Pro early 2013.

    Two factor authentication turned on.

Tried everything but option does not appear. I guess early 2013 is not supported...

No, the Mac needs to support all Continuity features, and that requires mid 2013:

See the requirements here:  Automatically unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch

Use Auto Unlock with any Mac and Apple Watch that meets the Continuity system requirements:

    • Apple Watch (1st generation), Apple Watch Series 1, or Apple Watch Series 2 using iOS 10
    • Mid-2013 or newer Mac using macOS Sierra

The official Apple requirements state a mid-2013 or later Mac is required:

But the funny thing is, the rMBP early 2013 15" does support all continuity features. And it seems to me that Apple did change that wording a few days ago and didn't do it very consistently, because if you have a look on the German website (apple.de, if you don't speak German you have to take my word for it or trust google translate) you will see this description:

    "Automatisches Entsperren

Unterstützt von Mac Modellen aus dem Jahr 2013 und neuer.

Erfordert eine Apple Watch mit watchOS 3 und ein iPhone 5 oder neuer."

And it means as much as, all Mac from 2013 are supported...

I think for the betas it also said 2013 models.

I read somewhere else that the early 2013 models do not have some sort of proximity sensor that the mid-2013 models have.

Apple seems to be updating the German versions of the support documents right now. I cannot even set the language to German on the support pages right now.

When I modify the URL of the English support document to https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT206995

by using "de-de", I get the English text, but a German footnote.

That was always like that I think, Apple only has an English version of the support system. At least I have never seen a fully German support Page.

It depends. For the most support documents and user guides I could always find a translated German version or a Spanish version.

And they are back now, for example German version of the Continuity page is here:

    https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT204689

It is much shorter than the English version, outdated "Zuletzt geändert: 21.01.2016" and does not yet mention "unlock".

I have the mid-2012 rMBP and I don't see this feature in the settings either.

According to macrumors, Auto Unlock is only available for the mid-2013 or newer.

I had a similar problem with my 13" MBPr (mid 2014). I had enabled two-step verification when I updated my iPhone to iOS10, so, whenever my Apple ID password was entered, a pop-up window with a 6-digit number would appear on the iPhone for the second step verification. I believe that's why the auto unlock check box was actually being shown to me, even though turning it on had no effect.

Now, this is what solved my problem:

    1) Go to https://appleid.apple.com/ > Security > Edit > Turn OFF two-step verification.

    2) Turn two-step verification back on again. (SAVE your recovery key, because it will be asked in order to finish this step of the process). From now on the second step verification pop-up window will show you a 4-digit number (instead of 6 as before).

    3) You need to log in again into iCloud on both the iPhone and the Mac. If you're lucky, you'll be prompted to just reinsert your password. Otherwise, you'll need to log out and log back in into iCloud.

    4) Unpair your Apple Watch from your iPhone.

    5) Pair your Apple Watch back to you iPhone.

    6) Go the Security setting on your Mac and enable your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac.

Now you should be able to use your Apple Watch you unlock your Mac whenever you're close to it.

    I hope this helps everyone.

And sorry for the bad english.

Try disabling iCloud login or diabling File Vault in System Preferences
