Q: if I upgrade to ios10 will photoshop CS4 stop

I'm on a MAC desktop, currently 10.7.5. Photoshop CS4 is currently running fine. If I upgrade to 10.8 or higher might PS stop running?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5), most library contents are AIFF

Thanks all for talking me through this. I've been on the phone with Apple support. she called my local apple store and the manager said they can update me to 10.10. I have an appointment next Wednesday. I will back up my files to My book for MAC 2 TB, though it won't be bootable. I'll get more RAM if needed. I am confident that the new Photos app will accommodate all my iPhoto images. I'll remind the genius bar guys to install Apple legacy Java  Java for OS X 2015-001, in order for Photoshop to run. I hope the SF Giants win again tonight. Thanks all.

If you want to have a bootable system backup, you could go online and purchase, download and install and use a data cloning app, like Bombich Software CarbonCopyCloner or Shirt Pocket SuperDuper applications to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive.

This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.

    FYI,

You will neee more RAM. OS X 10.10 Yosemite will run slow without, at least, 8 GBs of RAM installed.

    Good Luck!

Some users, like myself, do not like the new Photos App for OS X.

This is one of the reasons I do not use OS X 10.11 El Capitán or the new Photos App.

I am staying with OS X10.8.5 Mountain Lion and OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks.

You need to make a duplicate copy of your iPhoto Library and move it to a different location (as an additional iPhoto backup) because the new Photos app will convert your entire iPhoto library to the new Photos app format and setup and if you do not like the way the new Photos app works or is laid out, there is no going back to iPhoto as the iPhoto library is permanently converted to the new Photos format and now your stuck using a Photo app you do not like.

Make another additional copy of your iPhoto Library and store it in another location on your external MyBook hard drive.

Michel: thanks for sticking with me as I struggle through this. I'm in my 70's and tend to think of everything as "the last time I do this". I only use iPhoto to decide which images are worth editing in PShop. Very rarely do I work on them in iPhoto and then only quick crops etc. Can you be more specific about what you dislike about the new photo app?

Superduper is certainly affordable. Does it allow you to drag the iPhoto from a previous version, i.e. 10.8 or 10.9 into my newly installed 10.10 ? Are you suggesting that I only install 10.9.5 for this reason, and skip the 10.10 version?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You can still iPhoto (you may have to manually update versions from the Apple website because your Mac is 3 OS X generations behind to OS X 10.10 Yosemite) to get to the Yosemite compatible version of iPhoto.

Do a search on the Apple website. Use the search terms

    iPhoto downloads

If you want to explore the new Photos app, I am just suggesting you manually make another copy of your iPhoto library folder for the new Photos app to use, so you are not stuck using it if you feel you may not like.

I have years of images saved and organised in iPhoto based on how iPhoto works.

The Photos app destroys a good chunk of the organisation.

There are other issues with the Photos app that I , also, do not like nor appreciate about it.

I think that Photos as an Apple Photo app has been really "dumbed down" from the way iPhoto has worked for years and years.

Also, Apple ended support for Aperture, which I also use, and there is no longer any integration with Aperture with the new Photos App and, as usual. Apple has not designed an alternative for Aperture.

Once again, leaving pro and semi-pro users out in the cold.

Here is a complete description of the recent Apple Photos app for OS X Sierra.

    http://www.apple.com/macos/photos/

See what you think of it. Everyone is different. I don't like it. You may!

While cloning will make a copy of everything, it is only one copy.

Make another backup copy of the iPhoto library folder, you'll end up with two copies and put in elsewhere.

If you find you like the new Photos app in Yosemite, you can delete the copy later on.

I only mention my own circumstances and decisions for example.

I'm sticking with older OS X versions for other reasons of my own, as well as, for software compatibility as I am no longer a full-time professional an can no longer afford to upgrade/update my critical software, any longer.

SuperDuper will work fine for creating a bootable backup of your entire system.

    Good Luck!

My life is about being ready to go into the MAC store on Weds. You had advised me to remove all antivirus and hard drive cleaning aps.

All I have is lastpass, Adblock plus and noscript. These aren't anti-virus exactly. Would you advise disabling them in firefox's add-ons manager? I don't think I need to remove them?

    These are Firefox add-ons/extensions.

You do not have to do anything with these other than to update these add-ons when you upgrade to a newer version of Firefox.

    Good Luck!

I backed up with carbon copy cloner. Now I remember that I HAVE Avast, which describes itself as an antivirus. Do I need to remove it ?

    Yes!

Absolutely get rid of Avast antivirus!

    http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=32538.0

Antivirus is totally not needed with OS X.

Antivirus software is NOT needed if the Mac you are running is only running OS X. Antivirus apps interfere with normal performance and operation of a Mac because they program too many controls (program extensions) into the main OS X system software impacting/impeding general performance of a Mac.

Here are some of my tidbits of advice on how to avoid viruses in the future, if you encounter a virus, again.

Some anti-virus solutions can slow down your Mac, but to be honest, the best anit-virus app is you, the user and your brain.

Don't visit questionable websites or website you are unsure about.

Don't use Torrents or engage in "Torrenting"

Don't install pirated software or software downloaded from a questionable or unknown websites or untrutsted sources.

Java is still a vulnerability concern, if you do not need it, don't use it.

Use a browser filter and pop-up blocker

Don't open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize.

Install security updates when they become available

Educate yourself as to what threats are common and active.

In effect, use your own brain as the antivirus filter.

Follow that advise and in MOST cases, you will be fine and won't risk your Mac to potential Trojans, malware or viruses.

If you feel you need some baseline virus protection that is minimally invasive on the Mac OS X system, look into purchasing and installing

    ClamXAV

I deleted Avast. Now I can't see the iPhoto library to make a duplicate copy. Do I use CCC or just drag the library manually onto MyBook?

Then on the CCC page, " it says If you have backed up to this destination in the past,(I just did this) only items that have been modified since the last backup task will be copied.

I have to chose in the destination window: one choice is temporarily archive modified and deleted items. or create a new preset? or customize these settings? or maybe I don't need CCC for this?

thanks for all your patience and help.

You do not need to use CCC, again.

Your iPhoto Library is located inside of your Pictures folder on your user/Home location on OS X.

    It should say iPhoto Library.

You simply need to create another folder location on your external drive, open that folder, then hold down the Option key while you manually click and drag the iPhoto Library from the internal drive's location to this new folder location on the external drive to make a copy of the iPhoto library to your external drive.

    Good Luck!

I am a heavy Photoshop user and had the same doubts regarding Adobe CS4 running with the new Sierra. (With Yosemite and El Capitan the CS4 suite operated smoothly and without any problems. ) For a worst case scenario I checked Time Machine and all my backups, so I could reboot El Capitan if necessary.   Since I don't like Adobes Cloud subscription I also checked for possible Photoshop alternatives and found Affinity Photo for Mac very tempting.

https://affinity.serif.com/de/  After that I felt pretty safe and updated to OS Sierra. Once installed, I also downloaded Java for OS X Download Java for OS X 2015-001 which, as I understand it, is needed to run the Adobe CS4 suite. After that I tried Photoshop, InDesign and Dreamweaver - and all apps work seamlessly with OS X Sierra on my iMac. (iMac (Retina 5K, 27", end 2015 with Fusion Drive). So essentially my workflow stays about the same as before. However, I think that I will start working more and more with Affinity, replacing Photoshop CS4 step by step.
