Q: .apalbum files in iPhoto/Photos

I am running Yosemite 10.10.5 on a Mac mini (mid 2010). 2.66Ghz Intel core 2 duo, 8GB 1067MHz DDR3.  Upgraded from Mavericks in April 2016, now trying to "Restore" backup files from Zip Cloud (so I can wipe it off) and have found lots of .apalbum files.  Although I know that these are Aperture files, I never had Aperture, only iPhoto (v9.6.1) & then Photos (v.1.0.1), with the upgrade to Yosemite.  My questions are these:  (1) are these .apalbum files pertinent/necessary to my iPhoto & Photo files?  (2) if so, how could they be opened without Aperture?  or (3) if not, why are they there and can I blow them away before restoring my backups?

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Chances are that you do not have a usable backup - so far no cloud based backup has worked on an iPhoto or Photos library - do you have a local backup? Why do you need to restore a backup?

    Larry,

Really??  I had no idea that either iPhoto or Photos libraries couldn't be backed up in the cloud....  does that include iCloud as well?  Although I have all my files backed up with Time Machine, I wanted redundancy (keeping in mind Murphy's Law). I guess that I should continue to burn backups of all my photos to DVDs, no matter how time-consuming, and from what you are saying, I should stop restoring from ZipCloud.

    Thanks for your help!

    Probably

Again I have no knowledge of ZipCloud - but many tests of several cloud based backups for the Photos library  have all failed - it would backup your photos (which is all you can do with CDs unless your library is tiny) - any other types of files can be backed up on non Mac formatted disks but not the Photos or iPhoto libraries - they must alway be on a drive formattemed Mac OS extended (journaled)

and iCloud Photos Library is not a backup - I guess you could backup up a library copy to iCLoud drive although I'm not sure and am not aware of anyone testing

    And again

Why do you need to restore a backup?

As I said, I have everything backed up on an external (Mac OSX formatted - journaled) hard drive via Time Machine.  I was unaware of the constraints on backup of iPhoto/Photos libraries & appreciate the information. Now I can forget about using the Cloud for that...   Thanks, Larry.
