Q: Screen turned white and grey - iMac 27 inch El Capitan

Hello everybody,

While using my iMac for a few hours, my screen suddenly turned white and grey...

I'm a bit shocked that it happend and I've shutdown the computer for a few seconds...

After waiting around 10/15 seconds, I've turned the computer back on and works again luckily.

But I'm curious what's wrong with my iMac.

Can anybody tell me what's probably wrong with my iMac hardware/software?

Here's a link.

I hope you guys can help me with this.

Thanks in advance!

Based on the photo, my guess is a failed GPU. To know for sure, take the computer to your local Apple Authorized Service Provider to be professionally diagnosed. Then you can decide what you want to do.

I have the iMac already for several months.. Could you give me a explanation why the GPU suddenly failed?

Because, the Apple store is around 2 hours distance from here...

Because it's a machine and any machine can break. I know that isn't consoling however that's just how it is. If your computer is covered by AppleCare (If you have not purchased it you still can as long as the computer is still covered by the 1 year warranty) you should contact AppleCare immediately and then explain your situation. They can assist from there, possibly with in-home care or arrange shipping the computer.
