Safari crashing after update to Safari 10 on El capitan

I just updated Safari through the App Store on El Capitan. Now it opens for about 10 seconds and crashes just as it starts loading the pages.

I tried removing the new version of Safari with sudo and dropping in the last version (9.1.3) from a back up I made yesterday, but now that one behaves the same and crashes at start up.

I cant even re-download Safari 10 in the App store because it seems to think I'm up to date. Even after deleting any Safari apps from my Applications folder.

I put Sierra on an ext HDD to give it a try first in an attempt to escape any of this buggy stuff, but i'm getting it from a simple Safari update anyway.

I've searched google and it doesnt look like anyone else is having the same problem yet.

Anyone got any ideas?

Safari loads all my tabs but whenever I right click on any image to download it it immediately crashes... no "Safari quit unexpectedly" error message appears either ... I removed the Safari preferences.plist as I saw someone suggested elsewhere but that didn't help either.

I had the same problem.

I do SuperDuper! backups daily and I went back a day before I upgraded Safari and started up from that backup HDD. Once started up, I located and threw out Safari 10 on my MBP and replaced it with Safari 9.1.3 from the backup. I did not go deeper and trash any of Safari's prefs or other pieces in the various library folders, just replaced the new app with the older one.

I'm running Safari 9.1.3 now and it's working fine (so far). Pages that were crashing it before are no longer causing problems; it seems I'm back to where I was before doing the upgrade to 10.

I'm going to wait until I do the Sierra upgrade to get the newer version of Safari unless I hear that this issue has been fixed. I plan to do the Sierra upgrade in a week or so. I used to do these things on day 1 but I'm a bit more conservative now and I'm in no huge rush.

Good luck with this. Let me know if you run into issues, glad to try to help.

Not really much effort at all to go back to an earlier version. One of the many reasons to do regular backups.

I'm sure Apple did not intend for people running older systems to have crashes although it might have been a mistake to make Safari 10 a backward compatible upgrade. Maybe better to keep it in Sierra until the bugs are worked out.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

In the end I just restored to the previous days state from my back up. Easy enough but still a pain considering its a browser update. This is the kind of thing I would expect in a new OS and I hold off installing any new OS till there have been a few updates to smooth it out.

I didnt try any of the fixes, I needed my Mac running properly last night. I think trashing prefs could have done it, but I prefer not to set up preferences, log back into all my sites, back up all my bookmarks etc. I know its not so hard or time consuming, but still its less of a pain for me to restore a back up and wait till Apple sort themselves out.

Eric. I couldn't have followed your advice anyway as I couldn't get Safari to stay open long enough to show any menu.

In the end, I think I am more inclined to install Sierra earlier than I usually would than to do the El Capitan Safari update.

So I "upgraded" to Sierra and I got the same problem with Safari.

I wiped my drive and did a fresh install, and the problem is the same, Safari crashes before it even loads the first page.

If I trash my User/Library/Safari folder then it will start up for about 30 seconds max but then it crashes again.

I followed all of Eric's tips but none worked which isn't surprising as its a clean install.

This might be better as a new thread as its now a Sierra problem rather than an El Capitan one.
