What happened when you tried to upgrade to El Capitan?

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

    Application Compatibility

    Applications Compatibility (2)

    El Capitan 10.11 Compatibility information

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

How are you trying to install El Capitan?

Are you use Applications -> App Store -> El Capitain download?  This is the only way.

Or are you fetching something from the Apple.com web site?  The would only be point updates after you have installed El Capitan via Applications -> App Store.

Can you tell us what error messages you are getting?

Immediately after the fail, if you look in Applications -> Utilities -> Console are there any relevant messages.

Hi Bob - Yes I went through the App store and have successfully upgraded to Sierra. Should I upgrade again?

If Sierra is going to work for you, then you might as well just say with it.

Now that you are at Sierra, if you tried to go back, you would need to backup your data first, reformat the drive, then do a clean install of El Capitan, then use Applications -> Utilities -> Migration Assistant to move your data from the backup device to your system.

Mostly it is a pain to go backwards.

    3-2-1

    3) You should have 3 copies of your data, the original being the 1st

    2) You should use 2 different backup utilities to 2 different backup devices (protects against bugs in one backup utility for affecting the other backup)

    1) You should keep 1 copy off-site (protects against theft and natural disasters)

Computers and storage devices fail if you use them long enough.  You should be backing up your data.  Think about how you will feel if you loose any of it, and think about how much it would cost you to loose that data, and then consider investing in doing backups.
