Q: iMovie crashes after Sierra update

I am using a Macbook Pro Retina from late 2014, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory with 398GB available storage.

I am running iMovie Version 10.1.1.

Today I upgraded to OSX Sierra with no issues. I editing a very short (16second) movie and when trying to export, the application crashed. I tried exporting it as a file, exporting it to the Theater, and numerous other methods, but as soon as I choose one method of exporting, the application crashed.

I've tried shutting down the computer and it still persists.

Rich, I followed all your suggestions and iMovie still crashed immediately after loading.   Another experienced poster said to re-install iMovie from the AppStore.  I tried that too, but was offered "run" rather than "download." I later realized how to un-install an app first, but in the meantime I tried something else that worked and may offer a clue to the problem.

My one year old MacBook Pro Retina showed the latest iMovie ver. 10.1.2 after upgrade to Sierra, but had the crashing problem.  We just got a new iMac which came with El Capitan but was immediately upgraded to Sierra without running any programs first.  The iMove on it worked fine.

So, as an experiment I renamed my iMovie.app to iMovie_old.app and moved it to another folder.  Then I copied the iMovie bundle from the new iMac into my MBP-ret and it also worked fine, immediately finding the couple of projects (grandkids home movies) I had made on it before the upgrade.

I realize now I could have (should have?) first deleted the old iMovie with the launchpad and then the download from the AppStore would have worked, but perhaps this indicates that something in the iMovie bundle is not completely replaced by the upgrade?   Admittedly I was "tinkering above my pay grade" but hope this helps.

This solved my problem. However, after uninstalling, I found that I had to purchase iMovie again (I was seeing the price in app store). Not sure if this is just in my case. I have Mac Mini late 2014. Luckily, I have a time machine backup so I used that to restore instead.
