macOS Sierra - No Sound

I just updated to macOS Sierra. Now I have no sound what-so-ever.

Checked all the usual things (speakers, volume, settings, etc.).

Is there a macOS 10.12 sound driver or anything that I can reinstall?

Mac mini, iOS 10, null

It's sadly true, widely documented on Apple Communities and Apple Developer Forum on Apple Seed official website.

You need to double check to reliable sources as I did, as simple denial is not very helpful here, pushing people losing their

time with reboot, changing cables and whatnot.

It's also officially announced on Fostex and Chord website.

As per NDA Agreement, I cannot link here to internal Apple Seed, but I can assure you several of us have filed a thread there on that very issue.

Reinstalling OSX seems to be little bit harsh before trying other steps.

  1. First, I would do what what @dianeoforegon suggested.
  2. If that doesn't fix sound issue for you, clear the PRAM -

Restart laptop and when system starts hold down CMD + ALT + P + R

Hold it until screen flashes 3 times and then let go off the keys.

Step 2 fixed it for me.

I've done everything short of reinstalling OS. So I'm "relieved" to hear Hellstan's comments. It shows that experts are just as baffled as I, a non-technical user. Yesterday my iMac got an SSD installed along with Sierra. I had been using 10.9.5 so, unlike most others on these threads, I couldn't assume the trouble lay with Sierra. Now I can.

On the bright side, I use a Tascam USB interface (US-100, discontinued but faithful), which still gives good input and output. Also, I DO have internal speaker output from system alerts and Audacity. Curious.

Kappy,

Your solution fixed my Mac Mini. In my living room I have a Mac Mini for the sole purpose of playing music from iTunes. After installing Sierra, ALL audio from ANY source went dead. After reinstalling Sierra using your procedure the headphone jack is working again.

Thanks for all you do.

I had the problem, but it is solved now.

Before I tell you what worked, you should know I tried everything on support community sites, and via Apple, reinstalled the upgrade to Sierra, to no avail. Apple advised me that the only solution left was to wipe the entire computer clean and reinstall the operating system, and that might not work either. Initially, they said it must be a hardware issue. I did not want to potentially lose data, programs, etc., so I passed.

A headset worked, so I went out and got a cheap external speaker at Goodwill. I plugged it in, and WOW. Instantly, the internal speakers reappeared in sound preferences, with volume controls and everything. The internal speakers work perfectly. The external speaker did not. Unplugged the external speaker and all internal speakers functions remained intact.

Hope this helps somebody.

Reinstall Sierra:

Reinstall OS X Without Erasing Drive

Please be sure you back up.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
  3. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid icon in the toolbar. Wait until the Done button activates, then click on it.
  5. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  6. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
