Q: People/faces ID in Sierra Photos pulling up non-functional names

Anyone know how to fix this? Is this a new setting I'm missing? I already sent feedback to Apple.

In Photos, when I come across a picture of an unnamed person, I can click on the "unnamed" field and a list of names appears. In Sierra, though, the list includes new semi-non-functional names based on email addresses that are causing issues with my library.

For instance, if I type my first name, I see three suggestions:

1. My full name, with the thumbnail associated with my Photos "face"

2. My full name with my Apple email address below it, and the picture from my Contacts entry

3. My full name with an alternate email I also have listed in Contacts, with no thumbnail

If I pick 1, everything works as usual.

If I pick 2 or 3, Photos makes a new person with just my first name. It does not auto-fill in the rest of my name. I end up with two Person entries, one with my full name and one with my first name. I then have to merge these. This happens with all recognized People, not just me.

Me too I won't call it a bug. You could have 2 persons with the same name. Using middle names or "Jr." / "Sr." is probably something you would do in the US, but it is not common in Europe.

    The bug is here:

-create a Person in Photos with the name e.g. "John Smith"

    -add photos to this name

-then add this person to your contact list

-tag again photos for him. But accidentally tag them with the "John Smith" from the contact list and not the Photos-managed Person also named "John Smith"

-correct your mistake by merging both names in Photos: Photos merges the photos of the Contact into the photos of the Person -> OK so far

-next time, later, you want to tag again photos for John Smith, you will get again two proposals: John Smith from Photos' persons and John Smith from your contacts

Expectation: there should be only one John Smith proposal, as Photos should have learned from the previous merging that both J.S. in Photos and contacts are the same.

And this problem has been around since Photos first came out - when we had faces albums instead of People. Photos does not forget the names we previously used and will always suggest all names we ever used.

An Photos Preference to restrict the suggested names to the names currently used for named Persons would help to get rid of the false suggestions.

I believe it, but knowing two people with identical names has to be somewhat rare for most users. Knowing them well enough to have them both listed as contacts would be even less likely, not to mention not having a nickname for either one... it quickly approaches the ridiculous.

What is even more ridiculous, is that it is impossible to find out the names of persons we labelled in Photos.  I am using Photos and the Persons album to record the names of persons, my students, my colleagues, people I meet at meetings or conference. I use it to look up the names before the next meeting. But Photos makes it really hard to find the names. If the name is in the contacts, Photos will only show the first name, but I really need to look up the last name. And the Info panel in Photos is the most ridiculous with respect to the persons. It does not show the name at all, but just tiny, tiny, tiny thumbnails of the faces, that we could see in the photo anyway. Why not show the names? That is what we need to find out.

Agreed with Léonie.  I find it strange that I am forced to use first names only when the contact is in my address book.  This leads to confusion when we have many contacts who share a common first name.

It is a similar problem in Mail.app.

When I am showing the mails grouped by conversations, I am only seeing the first names of the sender in the list of messages, if mail can retrieve the first name of the sender somewhere.

That makes it very hard to recognize the senders in the list of messages. The last names would be much more useful. And it is embarrassing at work, if someone else is looking at the screen and seeing this inappropriate familiarity. The names of business contacts should be treated less casually.

And showing only the first names is not even helpful for friends and family.
