How does the universal clipboard work?

I was trying the universal clipboard feature mentioned at http://help.apple.com/macOS/Sierra/WN/?lang=en_US#/universal-clipboard.

My Mac running Sierra and my iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 10 are right next to each other.

I copied a URL from the address bar in Chrome and then tried pasting it into the Notes app on my iPhone, but nothing got pasted.

What are the requirements/limitations of this feature?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), i5, 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM

Universal Clipboard is a Continuity feature, so to get it to work, you will need to be signed into the same Apple ID across all devices. Bluetooth will also need to be turned on for the feature to work, and Bluetooth LE is required. The following Macs work with Universal Clipboard:

- MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)

- MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)

- MacBook Air (2012 or newer)

- Mac mini (2012 or newer)

- iMac (2012 or newer)

- Mac Pro (Late 2013)

Continuity features are sometimes unreliable, and there have been reports about spotty performance with Universal Clipboard during the beta testing period. Sometimes it helps to sign in and out of iCloud to restore functionality, and you'll need to make sure Handoff is activated on your iOS device (Settings --> General --> Handoff).

I have an unexplained "glitch" (aka: not working) at our house with Airdrop:

Airdrop works between my iMac, my MBP, my iPad and his iPad.

Airdrop refuses to work between my iMac and his MBP (same year/specs as mine). Putting his MBP within 3 feet of my iMac doesn't change that - it refuses to recognize it, while, in turn, his MBP can see my MBP, my iPad, and his iPad.

There is no rational explanation for this. It should work, but doesn't. So, you may be running up against something similar and/or the hardware is simply "not getting it".

The new Continuity feature works for me, and a nice added feature. YMMV

I have found Airdrop to be very inconsistent in it's ability to connect.

Apple Support

Thanks for contacting Apple Support. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

Apple Support

Good Evening! I hope your day is well!

Apple Support

I see you are having an issue with your MacBook Pro. Can you give me some more details about this issue?

Me

I was trying to get Universal Clipboard to work between my Mac running Sierra and my iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 10. I believe I did all the settings according to the instructions, but copy/paste doesn't work in either direction.

Apple Support

OK Doug. So that I understand, you are trying to use the Universal Clipboard between Mac and iPhone. All Settings were correct but this feature still is not working for you. Is this correct?

Me

Yes.

Apple Support

OK. This is not the experience we want you to have with your device. Once set up correctly it should work. I too would have wanted to use the feature. I will be happy to assist you with this issue.

Apple Support

One moment while I take a look at the Settings.

Apple Support

Are both devices signed into iCloud with the same account?

Me

Yes.

Apple Support

Are bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on on both devices

Apple Support

Are they on the same Wi-Fi network?

Me

Oh, you know what. That's a good question. While I do have my MBP wi-fi turned on (so Siri knows my location) it's also connected via ethernet to my router. So that means my network connection isn't wi-fi in that case? Siri is using the wi-fi so it knows my location and can tell me the weather, etc. But could this be the problem?

Apple Support

If it is hardwired and the computer sees that it is no longer on Wi-Fi, this could be the cause of the misccommunication.

Apple Support

You can attempt to try and just for this purpose disconnect the ethernet and use Wi-Fi.

Me

I thought it was using BlueTooth for this though.

Apple Support

It actually has to use both.

Me

I have disconnected my ethernet cable.

Me

So now I am only on wi-fi. The same wi-fi network that my iPhone 6 Plus is on.

Me

Let me test.

Apple Support

OK.

Me

That didn't work either. I copies on my Mac, but it didn't paste into Notes on my iPhone.

Apple Support

OK. Are notes turned on, on both Mac and iPhone in iCloud?

Me

They are. But that shouldn't matter, right? I'm not doing syncing. I'm copying from an app on my Mac and just pasting into Notes on my iPhone. But they are both turned on, so Notes are syncing.

Apple Support

OK. Thanks for telling me.

Apple Support

One moment while I speak to a Senior Advisor. This is a bit odd.

Me

ok

Apple Support

Thanks for holding there is another step that we should check. Please go into System Preferences then General

Apple Support

In the Genera l tab, do you have the option to check the Continuity feature on the Mac.

Me

Allow Handoff is checked in General. I don't see anything that says "Continuity" though.

Apple Support

This is the option. That is correct Allow Handoff. Was this checked?

Me

Yes, it was checked.

Apple Support

Can you uncheck it and then recheck it again please.

Me

OK. I have unchecked and rechecked it.

Apple Support

Do you mind trying once more. If this does not work, I may have to get you to a Senior Advisor.

Me

One moment.

Me

That didn't help.

Apple Support

OK. i will get you to a Senior Advisor.

Apple Support

I am awaiting a Senior Advisor. I do apologize for the delay.

Me

No problem.

Apple Support

Thanks.

Apple Support

Just a few more moments. I will be right with you.

Me

ok

Apple Support

Thank you for your patience. I will be with you shortly.

Apple Support

Thanks for waiting. I'll be with you in just another moment.

Apple Support

I do apologize for the long wait. I am still awaiting a Senior Advisor.

Me

ok

Apple Support

Just a few more moments. I will be right with you.

Me

ok

Apple Support

Thank you for your patience. I will be with you shortly.

Apple Support

I am still awaiting for Senior Support. I can also set up a call for you for tomorrow at your convenience if the wait is too long. Someone from phone support can assist you as well in the Senior Department. I do apologize for this long wait.

Me

Actually, it is getting a bit long, and I need to go out and run some errands. Why don't we just try to continue at another time. If I have this case number can I just continue with it later?

Apple Support

Yes. No problem. I have pinned the notes for the issue. The case number is .....

Apple Support

I can also email this to you as well.

Me

Thank you. I will try again later and close this chat for now. Bye for now.
