photos app is crashing on mac when starting slideshow

Hi,

I have an issue that Photos app is always crashing when pressing "Play Slideshow" on selected photos (also when pressing "play" button). It was crashing on El Capitan and also on MacOS Sierra. However it does not crash if I make a project first and then play slideshow on project.

I have tried to do "Repair library", but that does not help.

Any ideas how to fix it?

Thank you.

Greetings SpeedRaceris,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

I see that your Photos app is always crashing when pressing play sideshow and pressing the play button. It isn't crashing though if you make a project and then play the slideshow of the project. I can imagine that it's concerning to have an app quit unexpectedly like that. I want to make sure that you can use the Photos app with no issues.

I would advise to test this in a new user to see if you get the same result with the Photos app crashing when pressing play slideshow and play without making a project first. To create a new user, please follow these steps:

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

  2. Click the lock icon User uploaded file to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.

  3. Click Add User uploaded file below the list of users.

  4. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.

Testing in a new user can help isolate the issue from the current user, to the entire system. Let us know how it goes.

Best Regards.

Greetings SpeedRaceris,

Thank you for testing in a new user, and we're glad to hear that it is working fine there.

Now what we would like you to do is test in your main user again, but this time start into safe mode before you test. Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. This is a good test to see if any third-party apps that are running in the background of your Mac could be causing an issue.
  1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

  2. After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

  3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

  4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac again, but don’t hold down any keys during startup. More information about safe mode is in the following link: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up - Apple Support
Have a great day!
