Q: macOS Sierra Photos "Repair Library" Issue

After updating to macOS Sierra, I tried to open the Photos app and got a "Repair Library" message saying "The library "[NAME]" has inconsistencies that must be repaired."  I suppose this isn't too surprising, since the library is over 560 GB.  When I click the "Repair" button, it goes to a "Repairing Library" screen with a status bar that is "0% complete" and a link to "Take a quick tour of photos while you wait >".  HOWEVER, then I get a pop-up window that drops down from the top of the Photos window that says again, "Repair Library" and the same message, "The library "[NAME]" has inconsistencies that must be repaired."  It seems that no matter how many times I then click on the "Repair" button, I get stuck in the same loop with no discernible progress: the pop-up window rises up and disappears, then drops back down again immediately with the exact same message.

Like a fool, I didn't make sure I had a backup before upgrading to Sierra (and with a 560+ GB library, I don't sync the library through iCloud).  The source library file IS there in the Pictures folder...apparently I just need to figure out how to repair the library without losing access to all my photos!  Has anyone else had this issue???

    Where is your library located?

Are you saying you have no backup at all?

Library is located in the "Pictures" folder (default Photos app library location, as far as I'm aware): Users > [NAME] > Pictures.

As far as backup, I suppose i do have various iterations of my library in various places.  I have the old iPhoto library (duplicated from before I upgraded to the Photos app), but obviously that doesn't contain any of my recent photos.  If I "Show Package Contents" on my current Photos library (the one that apparently needs inconsistencies repaired), the photos are still all there.  So I know the images aren't LOST.  Technically, I could probably find a way to create a new Photos library and then just reimport the tens-of-thousands of images and videos.  HOWEVER, quite a bit of editing, albums/slideshows/projects, etc. would be lost in this process...literally YEARS of work, much of which I would never be able to replicate at this point.  I'm almost hoping this is a bug that could be fixed easily or with an imminent macOS update.  Even if there's something about my Library that is so corrupt that it can't be repaired, I'd expect the Photos app to tell me as much rather than putting me in an endless loop of notification windows.  That's not what I've come to expect of Apple software!

Operating withou a current backup is a 100% guarantee to lose data and is a really bad decision - and updating/upgrading software with no current backup greatly increases the probability of losing data today rather than later

If you hold down the option and command keys while launching Photos and use the repair - and always make a backup prior to repairing the database

I have this same issue as well. Rebuilding the library has not worked even by doing the command option repair.

Hoping a update will fix this, not going to mess with it for now.

I have a backup, if Photos is going to do the same thing to the backup file, what is the purpose of restoring the backup for those that are propping it up as some kind of solution?

The backup is not the issue, the Photos bug is the issue.

And IF Photos is not going to do the same thing then it is the solution - IF is a GIANT word

and obviously this is not major, widespread bug since so far two people have reported it

If you want help this is a good place o come - if your want to report bugs it is a really bad place to come since no one except other users read your report  --  http://www.apple.com/feedback/

If you only want to RANT then no place is a good place since that totally wastes your and others time

After upgrading my Mid-2012 Macbook Pro, I got the "Library has inconsistencies that must be repaired" message. I got the drop-down window a couple times. It took several hours for the progress bar to move from "0% completed". Once it started moving, it went a fairly brisk pace, considering the size of the library ( I also have well over 500GB  of photos).  Are you not getting the progress bar at all? Or is it just not showing any progress?

My progress bar got to 90%, then stuck there for several more hours; I think it was four hours before it went to 91%, then about four more hours to complete. All in all, a little over 12 hours for my library repairs, start to finish, without using my laptop while repairs were running.

I hope you get your library back in one piece. I don't know about you, but I'm seriously considering migrating my pictures to Google Photos or something similar; Photos doesn't seem to be a good archival tool for half a terabyte of pictures.

restore your backup form before this occurred?

Often this indicates you have run clean up software like CleanMyMac or MacKeeper that have destroyed your library - have you?

Repair doesn't seem to work. I repaired mine in the hope it would clear the blank people thumbnails. It repaired and completed but only showed 61 photos. The photos were all still there and if I tried to re-import it knew it was a duplicate. If I re-imported it changed the thumbnail to the wrong one. I tried pulling off time-machine but the it wanted to repair again - same issue and same 61 photos shown. In the end I restored back to El Capitan and re-installed Sierra. Leaving the repair alone now!

Mine took forever just like yours, with the hiccups at 91 and 92 just like yours.  Now it has been running for a day and a half uploading my >48,000 photo library to iCloud Photo Library and is only down to 41,628, and that number hasn't changed in the last half hour.  There is no short term visible progress.  A couple times I paused and resumed with no seeming effect, and I even Shut Down and Rebooted the iMac and saw no effect with that either.  When I first uploaded my library six months ago, at least I would periodically see some progress to give me confidence to keep going.  Is anyone having the same issue with iCloud Photo Library?

Larry, if you ask why you did not run a backup you don`t provide any solution! Simply because the mistake already happened. So you must say there is no solution to repair/recover if you don`t have a backup. Or you tell a workaround if any.

How much free storage is on your system drive? Repairing the library can require plenty of additional storage for a large Photos Library.

Similar problem. I have Mac Mini 2012. I updated to Sierra on 9/27. On 9/29 I saw a message saying my photo library needs repair after a failed iPhone synch. After the repair, I lost 15000 of 50000 photos. All photos after May, 2015 were lost.

The Mini has a 1TB HD and only 400GB were used so space is not a problem. I went to time machine and restored the Photo Library to 9/25. Upon opening the Photos I was asked to repair the library again. After that, I saw the same photos ends at May, 2015.

I am fairly confident the photos are in the time machine so no panicking yet. But this is very annoying. Any suggestions?
