iPhone7 Bluetooth issue in the car

My brand new Iphone7 seems to have bluetooth problems in my car. Everything works but the sound drops sometimes (often) when I listen to music. I didnt have this issue wiyh my 6s and IOS10. I tried to reset everything but the problem persists. The iPhone is recognized by the radio inmy Toyota, but the sound drops just as it was a radio in a tunnel.

I provided this to the techs weeks ago, but it seems like there was no headway. So here are the results of my trials for everyone to read:

I work in an environment where I have access to soundproof rooms. The walls are steel with padding and are about 6" thick (solid). These are "dead spots" for wireless in my building, which I surveyed and had to plan around because of the walls. I also work with deploying a lot of iOS devices, so most of my colleagues have an iPhone.

Testing environment:

I tested the area with an OptiView XG using AirMagnet Spectrum XT software. This device and software is used to measure the amount of Radio Frequency (RF) radiation in a given area to troubleshoot issues with wireless, and to help design wireless networks for large corporations. This helped me to ensure that there were no stray 2.4GHz interferers while testing, meaning that the only devices emitting 2.4GHz band RF were the "Devices" listed below (Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1) and the phones.

Additionally, I tested the cars listed below in several environments with and without interferers nearby. These were less controlled, however mirrored the exact same results.

Stuttering/Skipping:

To show an example of the skipping sound that I am referring to, please take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGHFDRVA958

Bluetooth devices tested:

  • Cars: 2013 Ford Focus, 2011 Toyota Venza, 2007 BMW 335i, 2006 VW Jetta
  • Devices: Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1

iPhones tested:

  • iPhone 6s - No problems
  • iPhone 6s Plus - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (T-Mobile, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Sprint, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 (Verizon, A1660) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • There were two other GSM iPhone 7 Pluses that I trialed, but I don't have the model numbers in front of me to list to provide exact details. Both had issues.

As you can see, the issues are localized to the GSM models using the new Intel modems. This further solidifies the belief that there is an existing hardware issue and not a problem with software, interference, or other manufacturer's devices. I'm not sure what else I can do to troubleshoot with the Apple reps, but after spending upwards of $5000 with Apple in 2016, I can't help but to feel neglected.

After another 30 minutes of driving around without any stuttering, I'm feeling pretty hopeful.

To confirm: I'm on an iPhone 7 Plus (A1784), 128GB with AT&T. I drive a 2011 Prius with stock radio and Bluetooth. I've had intermittent stuttering audio since the first days of iPhone purchase. The audio will cut out for a half to a full second. Bluetooth does not completely disconnect. I posted a YouTube video link showing my specific problem — which matched the OP's — in an old reply.

With iOS 10.3, I've been able to drive around for over an hour without stuttering — LTE is on, normal assortment of apps are on, streaming songs from Apple Music... Basically how things should have been from the beginning.

Note: I chose to delete the previous BT connections (on car and iPhone) and re-connect everything. Wanted to start with a clean slate this morning.

Well, after unpairing my watch, doing a 'Reset All Settings' on the phone and 'forgetting' the bluetooth settings, I managed to get it working in the car okay, at least for a short drive. However as soon as I re-pair the Apple Watch Series 2 the problem comes back as bad as before. Putting the watch in airplane mode instantly solves the problem, but taking it out of airplane mode brings it back again. Clearly some interaction issue between the watch and the phone that's showing symptoms streaming music via Bluetooth. Anyone else with this combination who can confirm similar behaviour (iPhone 7 and Apple Watch S2)?

ios 10.3 update fixed this issue for me.

Acura TSX (2013) and iphone 7plus ATT.

In the past i disabled LTE while driving as a temporary fix. But not anymore with ios 10.3.

Bluetooth now working flawlessly in my car with LTE on my phone. In the last 3 days since the 10.3 update i have been streaming songs, making calls via bluetooth over ATT LTE on my phone and everything is working well.

I am glad apple finally fixed this ridiculous bug.

I found a workarround that is working in my case and acter upgrading to IOS 10.3

My issue is the drop calls while in a call. The call disconnects from the car audio and goes tonthe phone and a few seconds after returns to the car.

I tried all the things you can imagine and all the settings combinations and even a DFU restore.

I m using an Iphone 7 plus now with IOS 10.3 and Ford Sync 2 audio handsfree.

IPhone 7 connectivity on Ford company car and personal Lexus either won't work at all (Sync on Ford) or cuts out every few seconds on Lexus. In addition on my Lexus it recognizes the phone as connected but I cannot hear any of the calls through the hands free option? Any ideas - seems to be purely on the Iphone 7 side.....l.

I am still having the same issue even after the install of IOS 10.3. Same setup - Ford Sync 2.0 and iPhone 7. Is there a workaround that was not explained, or were you referring to the upgrade to 10.3?

Still unable to use phone with Bluetooth during calls. I also did a complete DFU restore. However, I tried that before the 10.3 upgrade was available. Did you do a restore after the upgrade? I use T-Mobile, and am thinking of asking for a completely new phone.

I have this issue with my iphone 6S. I listen to audio books, and it randomly cuts out. I noticed that the radio says no connection to bluetooth for a second...then it reconnects and starts playing again. this used to work fine with the same phone. It started happening after an IOS update. My wifes andriod device works fine. This issue happens in my Acrua TL and MDX, but not bluetooth headsets. It must be a Bluetooth issue on the phone. Please help.

I have had the problem with connecting to my car over bluetooth , since buying the iPhone 7 plus and spending over €1000. I have been monitoring this blog in the last 6 months in the hope that somebody had found a solution. iPhone 6 worked beautiful on my Lexus 450h and was very valuable to me while driving, handsfree telephone is okay but when I try to connect via bluetooth to any other app (e.g. Podcasts), it doesn't recognise the phone (and asks me to check the settings of the phone).

I have the European version of the phone, and have deleted all versions of the phone in the car and re-paired a number to times as well as re-booting with version 10.3.1 of IOS (basically done everything that Apple advices).

Does anybody have any solutions apart from going back to iPhone 6?

I am having the exact same issue and was able to validate the same as you did. I bought a brand new 7+ and every time I try to play music in my Mercedes e350 it consistently skips, I also have an iphone 6 which plays without a problem and I upgraded the 7+ from a 6+ and never had this issue.

So it is definitely an iPhone 7 issue but I can't find anything on a resolution besides the stuff that is a no brainer (restarting, repairing, resetting, etc) nothing works.

I always seems that there issues with a new phone, makes you not want to upgrade anymore.

Yes I am having this issue with my Apple Watch and a fairly inexpensive Anker bluetooth kit for the car. Interestingly enough though, If I'm at home in my house I can listen to music on my Bose Soundlink Mini II with no skipping. The issue is only in the car.. it could however, be the fact that I'm using wifi and not LTE while I'm in the house, but using LTE for streaming while I'm in the car.

It would seem my original diagnostic was incorrect. Even putting the watch into airplane mode does not solve the problem. In fact I can no longer find any reliable way to make it work. Even putting the phone into airplane mode no longer seems to solve the problem. It appears that the watch or something triggers a declining spiral of some sort on the phone, that only a full reset can address. Unfortunately I can't spend a day resetting my phone everytime I want to listent to music in the car (which is more often than that).

Anyone had any other luck or hints? Even the Apple folks are stymied now.
