iPhone7 Bluetooth issue in the car

My brand new Iphone7 seems to have bluetooth problems in my car. Everything works but the sound drops sometimes (often) when I listen to music. I didnt have this issue wiyh my 6s and IOS10. I tried to reset everything but the problem persists. The iPhone is recognized by the radio inmy Toyota, but the sound drops just as it was a radio in a tunnel.

I provided this to the techs weeks ago, but it seems like there was no headway. So here are the results of my trials for everyone to read:

I work in an environment where I have access to soundproof rooms. The walls are steel with padding and are about 6" thick (solid). These are "dead spots" for wireless in my building, which I surveyed and had to plan around because of the walls. I also work with deploying a lot of iOS devices, so most of my colleagues have an iPhone.

Testing environment:

I tested the area with an OptiView XG using AirMagnet Spectrum XT software. This device and software is used to measure the amount of Radio Frequency (RF) radiation in a given area to troubleshoot issues with wireless, and to help design wireless networks for large corporations. This helped me to ensure that there were no stray 2.4GHz interferers while testing, meaning that the only devices emitting 2.4GHz band RF were the "Devices" listed below (Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1) and the phones.

Additionally, I tested the cars listed below in several environments with and without interferers nearby. These were less controlled, however mirrored the exact same results.

Stuttering/Skipping:

To show an example of the skipping sound that I am referring to, please take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGHFDRVA958

Bluetooth devices tested:

  • Cars: 2013 Ford Focus, 2011 Toyota Venza, 2007 BMW 335i, 2006 VW Jetta
  • Devices: Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1

iPhones tested:

  • iPhone 6s - No problems
  • iPhone 6s Plus - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (T-Mobile, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Sprint, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 (Verizon, A1660) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • There were two other GSM iPhone 7 Pluses that I trialed, but I don't have the model numbers in front of me to list to provide exact details. Both had issues.

As you can see, the issues are localized to the GSM models using the new Intel modems. This further solidifies the belief that there is an existing hardware issue and not a problem with software, interference, or other manufacturer's devices. I'm not sure what else I can do to troubleshoot with the Apple reps, but after spending upwards of $5000 with Apple in 2016, I can't help but to feel neglected.

iPhone 7 plus. iOS 10.1. AT&T GSM. Ford Fusion Energy.

Bluetooth A2DP problems. Stuttering. Speed changes. Disconnects (that can only be solved by pulling the car over, turning the car off, opening the door to shut down the system and then start the car up and re-pair). Problem also existed when I installed iOS 10.0 on my 6S plus. So it was iOS 10 - not the new phone. Can't use the USB input of the car because the car puts out too little power to charge the phone... the phone actually discharges. Can't use headphone jack because I use a cradle and have no jack.

There is a workaround and that is I have to put the phone in Airplane Mode, then turn on BlueTooth only and then the problems disappear. However, I have no internet/cell service. This leads me to believe it has something to do with the cellular radios and interference.

Have submitted my findings on Apple Bug Reporter and the engineers installed a profile on my phone to collect sysdisgnose logs, but after my first couple of submissions, I have not heard from anyone, although the "BUG" is still considered opened. Saw that iOS 10.1 fixed bluetooth problems with third part devices but after reading the inter webs it seems Apple was more concerned fixing compatibility with Samsung Gear watches than a standard A2DP spec which, correct me of I'm wrong, hasn't changed since iOS 10's introduction.

Very beyond annoyed because I spend a lot of time in the car and basically can't listen to the phone without disabling cell service.

I did call Apple Support and the usual "Erase your phone to factory and bla bla bla...." I hate when there's a known problem and support makes you do things to reset the phone as if it's the phone. If the problem only surfaced upon installation of iOS 10.x then I doubt it's the phone or my setup. Now I have to erase my phone and start over to prove a negative.

I took my car to Kia on Saturday (I drive a 2013 Optima) and they did some sort of engine service update to my car (and reset the radio), and I also installed iOS 10.1 yesterday. Haven't experienced any pairing issues since Saturday. I couldn't tell you which it was that seems to have fixed the problem. Keeping my fingers crossed that it has been fixed. Will keep everyone updated.

I have had the same problem with my BMW i3 and iPhone 7+. iPhone 6+ worked fine. Now it connects -- I can see the album cover I am playing on the phone in the dashboard display, but no sound -- ever.

I found a temporary workaround at least for audio by connecting with lightning to USB in the center console. Audio flows through, but still cannot do a phone call through the car.

I am also having the same issue in my 2011 Infiniti G37 Sport. Once Connected, if i pause the music, it will temporarily play a couple of songs without any skipping.

An additional issue that i am seeing is the Music Text (Artist, Song, Album and Track Time) do not show on my Cars Navigation screen anymore. It will pop up for a second and then disappear, shortly after the music starts to cut out.

This issue did not happen with older iPhones nor did it happen with my old Galaxy 6 Edge Plus.

Same Issue. The Artist, Song and Album display for about 3 seconds then it all disappears. Today I noticed that the Artist, Song and Album displayed the entire time when i first got into the car but when I went to AM/FM Input and then back to BlueTooth it then reverted back to disappearing after about 3 seconds into a Track. I hope this gets corrected in a future update.

I Posted a workaround earlier that works. However putting the phone in airplane mode is a horrible long term workaround. I have since experimented and found a better workaround:

GOto Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > turn off all LTE. Killing LTE kills the problem. Granted your phone will revert back to 4G but at least you still will have cell service and internet. Until Apple can resolve this.
