I have an iMac (Early 2013 21.5inch 8GB) that is shutting down then restarting unexpectedly often more than once a day. I ran the hardware diagnostics, verify disk and permissions. All found no problems. Any suggestions? I bought this machine this past June from B & H in NYC.

My guess is the cause of your problem is that you have installed Sophos AV software, not only is this totally unnecessary it frequently causes more problems than it solves. OS X is extremely secure and does not require ANY antivirus, cleaning or other types of third party maintenance apps to run well. If simply kept up-to-date Mac OS runs well frequently for many years. Locate the developers uninstall instructions for Sophos and uninstall it. Then restart in Safe Mode to clear some caches and then restart normally and test.

Thanks for the info. It took a bit of doing to get Sophos uninstalled but the iMac seems to be happier without it. I'll monitor the system for awhile to see if the problem is fixed.
