Same Mac appears twice in list of devices

After my MacBook Pro returned from the Apple Store following repairs, the same MacBook appears twice in the list of devices on my Apple ID account page.

When I click on either of the MacBook Pro icons above, the pop-up window shows the same operating system and serial number. There's no information about the time that the device was last accessed or any other way to tell which is associated with the post-repair MacBook Pro. How can I tell which can be safely deleted?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Greetings johntheeditor,

Thanks for posting here on the Apple Support Communities. I see that after a repair your Mac is listed twice on the Apple ID account page. I’ll be more than happy to help.

You can safely remove both of those Macs listed there and the correct one will reappear the next time it connects to your Apple ID. You can confirm this information here:

Check your Apple ID device list to see where you're signed in - Apple Support

In particular, take a look at the information at the very end of "Remove a device from the list"

Remove a device from the list

If your device is missing, you can use Find My iPhone to find your device and take additional actions that can help you recover it and keep your data safe.

If you aren't using your device anymore, or if you don't recognize it, you might want to remove it from the list:

  1. Click the device to see its details, then click Remove.

  2. Review the message that appears, then click again to confirm that you want to remove the device.
  3. If you're still signed in with your Apple ID on the device, it might reappear on your account page the next time your device connects to the Internet. To permanently remove the device from your account page, sign out of iCloud, iTunes, iMessage, FaceTime, and Game Center, or erase the device.

Take care!

Good morning johntheeditor,

Thanks for getting back to us. I have Two Factor Authentication enabled and when I removed one of my devices from that list, I did have to sign back in. So it is possible you may as well. Having the duplicate on there is ok, so if you choose to leave it there, it will be fine. If you wish to correct it, then removing both, and signing back in on your Mac will make sure only one is listed.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks, Starr.C! The main reason I want to remove the duplicate is so I don't run out of authorizations. (There used to be a limit of 5.) I suspect that after I upgrade to Sierra, only the active representation of my computer will show as upgraded, and I can delete the other. I need to wait to upgrade for a while until some of my applications are updated (I'm talking about you, ScanSnap). Meanwhile, I agree that there's no real problem with the duplicate. Thank you all for your help!
