When trying to install macOS Sierra I get a popup asking for my password which says "Install macOS Sierra is trying to add a new helper tool". I've never had this with previous updates and searching these discussions and more generally on Google draws a blank. Is it safe to put my admin password in and proceed with the install?

Exact same issue here.
Sierra updated earlier today to 10.12.6 with no issues but when I try to go to High Sierra with the 'helper tool' my password is rejected over and over.
Hope a workaround turns up.

As far as I can tell you have no option to proceed.
Is it safe. We can only assume so, if you trust the big Apple.
Thanks for the reply. I trust Apple insofar as it relates to my MBP. My concern is that there seem to be no other reports of this popup or questions about it. Is everyone getting it when they install Sierra, or is it just me?

I have the exact same problem...However the exact same app worked without any fuss on my iMac...but never worked on MacBook Air ...Both running latest mac OS Sierra......So is it a mac OS Sierra problem or some other??

Just to add, I took the file from the privileged key folder on my iMac in Library. Copied onto MacBook (it was not there) and tried to launch again. Still failed. Its all the exact same software etc. I did restart etc etc. After the prompt for my Admin password it still never installed and then the helper file i just put in there had disappeared.
So the helper file was installed on iMac and not MacBook with exact same software installation file. Both devices running exact same as in latest mac OS Sierra. Makes no sense to me so if anyone can help.

I've had this pop up, I also can't get Sierra to install and I think this is the problem, because helper stops responding and my computer won't restart. For some reason lately I haven't been able to restart my Mac normal, I have to press the physical button to restart now.
Same here , can't install, don't even know the username and password since my apple ID information once entered is rejected.
I had this also, i installed helper tool on mac & macbook with no problems
I rebooted the mac holding command R to get to the terminal and reset my password, after that i was able to enter the new password during the new Sierra install and now everything is running as it should.
The same pop up! It won't accept my Apple ID and password ! I guess I won't be updating unless someone figures this out. Frustrating...
