Q: iMovie 10.1.2 crashes on startup with Codec32BitTool error-log

iMovie 10.1.2 on El Capitan crashes shortly after startup – I can get it to display the welcome message – and there are two User Diagnostic Reports in Console.  The relevant message appears to be as follows:

Codec32BitTool_sb_2016...crash:

Dyld Error Message:

  Library not loaded: @rpath/AECore.framework/Versions/A/AECore

  Referenced from: /Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/PlugIns/Compressor/CompressorKit.bundle/Conte nts/Frameworks/AECore.framework/Resources/Codec32BitTool_sb

Reason: no suitable image found.  Did find:

  /Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/PlugIns/Compressor/CompressorKit.bundle/Conte nts/Frameworks/AECore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/../../../../AECore.framewor k/Versions/A/AECore: mach-o, but wrong architecture

iMovie used to work, so I really don't understand at all why it is not doing so now.

Looking in the package library to find the actual file, the entry (an alias ...) was last modified on February 8, 2016.  I have no reason to suspect mischief.  But I don't know what to do to fix this.

From the error message it would appear that you are missing a low-level library.  Core framework is part of the operating system.  You say "iMovie used to work" but was that with version 10.1.2 and El Capitan or was that when you were using an earlier version of iMovie and/or OS?

I started using iMovie on El Capitan (the same OS/X version I am using now), although I last used it around May 10th.  I know of no system updates since then.

Exploring the iMovie package, following the path-names mentioned in the console trace, I do arrive at a library of about 1.3 megabytes size.  (This apparently is the one that is "mach-o but wrong architecture.")

This file, AECore, was updated on September 2, 2016.  I presume that this occurred as part of some routine Apple update.

I don't know if I can, for example, throw the application into the trash and reinstall it from the App Store . . . ?

There was an El Capitan security update on September 2nd which might have caused the file update but it does not seem to be causing problems for others including myself.  You could try reinstalling iMovie - though of course it won't help if the problem lies in your copy of El Capitan.   However, the message may be misleading and a result of problems with your iMovie library.    I would first try the following:

Launch iMovie with the option key held down (it will not try to load any library and leave you to choose one).  Does it still crash before you choose a library?

Delete preferences by restarting your computer, and launching iMovie holding down option and command keys.  Select the delete preferences option in the dialogue box which appears.

Launch iMovie with a different user account such as a guest account.

After trying both things the application continues to crash.

If a security update was applied on September 2nd, this would coincide with the date that I see.  Nevertheless, iMovie continues to crash at startup.  (And, if that library is "the wrong architecture," it obviously never will do otherwise.)

    Thanks for the help.
